java help
One of my Javas died this past weekend and now I have a lone Java. I found someone about 3 hours away that sells them. He only wants to sell them by a pair,
the Java I have is a male and my cage is 37-1/4" x 27-1/2" x 26-1/2" high. Will they be ok together or will the two males fight over the female. The pair is a brother sister also.
thanks

Re: java help
I think they will fight. Bad to keep bro/sis together as well, they will eventually want to mate which is VERY bad.
I would tell him you want just the hen or you arent interested.

Re: java help
I had Javas, they can be quarrelsome during breeding season especially with 2 males and a female in the cage. Best to take the unrelated male and the sister and make a pair and try to fine a mate for the other male (brother). My flight cage was the same size we had to didvid the cage into a two story cage because not only did the 2 males bicker but the 2 females jioned in and it got loud. Even with multiple nesting sites avaiable.
If you had a bigger planted aviary and space with all unrelated pairs in it I'd say go for it, but not in a cage that size. The bickering was not so nice to watch or listen to.

Re: java help
I honestly do not know how long he can be alone, I have always had pairs. Have you considered having a female shipped to you from an out of state bird breeder like Singing Wings Aviary or Birds Express?

That is some seriously cold weather! Where are you located? If you update your profile, it would help in answering questions.

Re: java help
It is updated, I live in Wisconsin, it is snowing now, No way would I attempt too ship a bird now, it would be too cruel.
Is there something I could put in with my java on a temporary basis to keep him company until I can get another. This is my first bird death in about 4 years so I am not used to having to deal with a lone bird
thanks

Re: java help
Sorry to hear about the loss of the Java finch. Keep an eye on all local ads - Kijiji, Craig's List and others. There's usually Java's available and I hope you can find another for your hen soon.

Re: java help
Some simple facts...
Your finch will be just fine on its own. However, your finch will be much happier with a friend or partner.
I think given your circumstances, waiting half a year to find them a friend or a new partner is not a big deal. Personally, I would wait and just get them a same species opposite sex partner as soon as that options is open to you.

Re: java help
Hi, I breed Java's. I have normals, fawns, whites, pieds, and silvers. I have Javas that are sweet as can be, not aggressive at all. And I have some that are aggressive when breeding but only with birds of a different species. And my personal experience is only when another bird gets too close to their quarters. Javas normally get along great with each other and also with mannikins and munias. I also find that the whites and silvers are less aggressive than the pieds and normals. I have them in a large aviary. I really don't think you would have a problem with 3 in a cage. However as Finchfry said if it is brother and sister it could cause a problem if they would happen to breed.
Note: This is my personal experience. As Cindy said, hers were quarellsome in a cage at breeding time.

If you consider shipping when the weather turns warm you can try FeatheredWagon.com also. They were at the Orlando show and his birds were very nice.

Re: java help
thanks to everyone, I found a female pied about 2 hours away so next weekend I will drive and get her. My male is white so it will be interesting to see the colors. The other pair may be related to mine so It is better that I don't get her.
thanks again
David
