The best advice I can give is to read ALL of the Finch Information Center, linked at left. There is so much information there, I have to go back from time to time and reread (because I am forgetful!). Once you have gone thru all the species information, you can start to think about what kind of finch you want. This will be determined by price, availability, how much room you have, how much time you can spend on the birds, and what appeals to you.
Zebras are a great beginner finch because they are inexpensive, always available, they are entertaining--but, they also breed like rabbits (which is good or bad, depending on whether you want to bother with babies).
Societies are another great beginner finch, also inexpensive, available, entertaining--but, they are harder to sex. They are usually easy to breed also. They have a very easy-going nature.
When you are ready to buy, if you can buy birds from a breeder, or a mart, or a bird show, you will usually get healthier birds for less money than what you find in the typical pet store. Always only buy birds that look healthy and well-kept--a bird with puffy, fluffy dull feathers that sits with its head tucked under its wing while you are looking at it may be sick, and why start with problems.

Wherever you go,stand a few feet away from the cage and pick out birds that are lively.Check out the beaks have no problems like crossed or distorted...bright eyes and smooth feathers...avoid quiet birds and saggy wings.
