Dry or Moist egg food?

Post by earlybird09 » Fri Oct 16, 2009 11:18 am

Does everyone offer there birds plain, dry egg food? I use Quicko and I do a 3-1 ration. 3 spoonfuls of egg food and 1 spoonful of water and get it lightly moist and crumbly and my zebras love it, especially since they have babies. I just didn't know if they would eat it as well if it wasn't moist? Thanks!

Dry ABBA 92 with ground Roudybush!!!! They like it better than seed. Though they still eat the seed, they are in the egg cup more.

My birds do not like their egg food any more moist than it already is.
I use either Orlux or Miracle Meal - they like it as is, no moisture added (the Orlux is already a bit moist due to the honey in it).

Mine get either
- Miracle meal only as it is from the bag
- egg mix of chopped up hard boiled egg (2 yokes + 1 white) + miracle meal + corn meal (the mm and cm is to dry out the egg or it gets sticky/clumpy)

The YB gouldian gets MM only, they ignore egg.
The 3 juv gouldians don't seem to be very keen on the egg mix. I am trying to get them to eat it, but it is going slow.
The others get my egg mix.

When I hard boil my eggs I peel the shell then I cut in half and put in fridge. overnight then run Thur a small food chopper they aren't moist at all I put each days into a plastic snack bag and freeze. But I still mix in miracle meal and wheat germ oil and egg shells etc. into a bag of egg each morning and feed

The nice thing about the dry commerical eggfoods like Miracle Meal, etc., is that you can set out a dish of dry food and leave it as long as you want, with no worry about it going sour. I think if you moisten it, then it could go sour fairly soon.

ABBA SEED told me the dry can be kept out for 2 to 3 weeks provided it isn't soiled in or gotten wet. I use little clear egg cups near the end of a high perch. All my birds go to the cups often all through out the day.
