Where do you sell

Post by CandoAviary » Sun Oct 18, 2009 4:09 pm

I am getting ready to sell some of my offspring and am curious as to what avenues other breeders use to sell thier birds. Please after voting explain pros and cons you have experienced.

Candace, I have not sold birds online here but I did sell some of my daughter's crested Geckos for her. I used Craigslist.com and Kijiji.com. i got good responses from both.

Craigslist is ok and does get a lot of traffic but on Kijiji I like the fact that you can post really nice pictures that are seen when you pull the category up.

In the past when selling baby lovebirds, Bourkes and Scarlet chested parakeet I ran an ad in our Newspaper in Ft. Myers. Within four hours of the ad running I sold all my babies and made close to $1200.00 that morning. That was about 10 yrs ago.

I am not sure if I had finches to sell how I would handle it this time. I am not a fan of strangers coming to the house. I may possibly consider a show.

Candace, I have only sold thru marts and thru referrals from other breeders. I am by myself, so I don't really like the idea of strangers coming to my house. I am very lucky in that the Ft. Worth Bird Mart is twice a year, and there is another bird mart in Temple, TX, which is twice a year. I have not used craigslist to sell finches, though I have gotten some on craigslist.

When I just had Zebras, I was able to sell them to two different feed stores that sold birds, but they were not interested in the more expensive finches--no market for them, they said.

Maybe you could check with some of the pet stores in your area.

Oh, I forgot until Sally reminded me...I used to sell finches to a friend of mine that owned a really nice pet store. I called my zebra off spring my seed money birds. The owner loved birds and took really good care of the finches I sold him. His shop is spotless. I still go down to Ft. Myers to visit family and get supplies from him.

I get the majority of my traffic through my website and through my ads on Hoobly and Kijiji.

I wouldn't bother advertising on Craigslist unless you are advertising old or "pet" quality birds for a small re-homing fee.
Really, they do not allow/want "breeders" to post - it is supposed to be limited to adoptions and such, so if you are trying to charge full price you'll just get reported.
I have only used Craigslist to re-home societies and for when I sold my fish-tank.

Most of the birds I have sold at the bird marts have been birds someone previously contacts me about, and picks up at the show.
I have only "sold" 2 birds at a mart/show.
And one of them was sold to the same gentleman who already had pre-purchased two birds, he just ended up buying a third while he was there :)

I think because at the bird marts, people want to be able to buy birds from you for $45 like some of the other sellers. (The guy with $45 goulds in Baltimore this weekend had one missing an EYE!! what the crap! )

Individuals specifically looking for nice birds from a reputable breeder to breed and show themselves are less concerned about cost.
So - the people who find me through my website, they KNOW what they are looking for, and they do not mind paying for top quality.

I consider my prices to still be reasonable, but it is hard to compete with $45 birds. Even if I can say - the bird you are looking at is $65, and his father is the 1st place Gouldian on the show bench behind me.
They don't seem to care.

I cannot believe if someone has a bird that is handicapped in any way that they even try to sell it. If I wasn't going to keep it I would GIVE it away to someone who offered it a nice home. At the last bird mart I had someone try to sell me a gouldian for twenty -five dollars that was missing a leg. If that had been my bird I would have happily given it to someone who would love and care for it.

And no, most people don't care about if the parents were show birds unless they are serious breeders. They just want a bird for a cheap price. :?

Donna, was the bird with one leg a female...you can't really breed her if it was. I can't believe they would charge anyone for a handicapped bird.

I would never list on Craig's list as I know it is not proper...I have listed some ads on other bird classifieds and have met some really nice people, no buyers, but people wanting more information. Most have been really new to the trade and are in the researching phase. That is always great to see... keepers asking questions and hungry for info. Others want me to ship and so far I have not offered that option. I do get contacts from my website also.
As far as people wanting the birds cheap... not everyone wants to show and breed. They just want something colorful to put in the cage. These are also the same people that don't learn about the birds requirements . These are the type of people I don't want to sell to. Poor birds. It is hard to compete with with lowball breeders.

Cindy, you would be surprized how well a one leg bird can breed. Especially those that breed in the confines of a nest

Just about everybody who buys from me either found me through my website or through word of mouth.

I found homes for 6 baby zebra's by using Craigslist.com, I asked for 1 bag of finch food per bird and to show up with a proper cage. I have 6 more that I will be listing in a few weeks. I also used kijji.com

I also use http://www.kijiji.com/ when possible. Sometimes I trade and sometimes I sell. I have not had too many young since I just started again a year ago. I also live near a bird farm so sometimes I will sell young to them. I don't get as good of price, but I use the money to buy food and supplies.

Hopefully I will have some babies soon. Two of my Gouldian pairs are sitting on eggs... =D>

Yes, it was a hen. And she bragged about what a GREAT mother she was and even showed me some of her babies she had raised and they were beauties. But a bird like that takes special perches etc...
and I didn't really think that my aviary could handle that and I didn't want to put her into a cage. But the point was... IF that had been my bird I would have given her to a lovely home and not tried to sell her.
