Re: which finch species has the best song?
I have had a strawberry finch and he had a nice song. I also have a green singing finch and he has a lovely song. I prefer his song over my canary's song. However, I've heard that the grey singing finch has a much better song than the green singer. I've done some research on youtube and found that the yellow rumped seedeater has a really pretty song too. I'm thinking of getting either a grey singer or a yellow rumped seedeater, but leaning towards the yellow rumped because they are so pretty.
Anyone has any experience with yellow rumped seedeaters? Please let me know. Thanks.

I would love a Strawberry finch. Can they be housed with Zebras?

Its individual preference really.
I like the Green Singer but then I am biased -
The Goldfinch must rank among the best too but to be honest nothing beats the Canary for volume or duration.
I would highly recommend You Tube and watch/listen to the numerous examples posted (try serinus mozambicus for the Green Singer - you will get far more search responses). Also listen to several examples of each species as there can be quite a difference between individual birds.

Yes I saw that some time ago - amazing.gostokom wrote:you're right its individual preferencedid you hear the mule of serinus mozambicus x canari sing european goldfinch?

Only a few type of finches can be trained this way, Chaffinches will only ever learn Chaffinch song but Canarys and close relatives seem to have a much more developed capacity for singing and when subject to the vocal calls of other species at a young age can (as evidenced rather nicely in the link) mimic with perfection the song of a non related species.

I love the song of the gouldians, it sounds like a whole aviary of birdsong is coming out of one little beak. It might be quiet but I find it beautiful.

Yes, it is a preference thing. I had a Strawberry but it never sang more than one short tune, maybe twice or three times a week or less. I have a Green Singer and his song is very nice and is actually different than the ones on Youtube. Mine sounds like a Canary sometimes. I also have a Cordon Bleu and the male has a nice soft song but it's not that loud. Still love it though. I can say one of the best singers is the European Goldfinch. It has a very sweet sound and beautiful song. You probably already know that from Youtube. Too bad these finches aren't popular here in N. America. I think they put Canaries to shame, though Canaries are best when it comes to how often they sing.
Chestnut manikins make a sound like Canaries in their songs.

Aren't Zebs a bit on the aggressive side for a diminutive Strawberry?brenleigh wrote:I would love a Strawberry finch. Can they be housed with Zebras?
I guess it would depend on the size of the cage and if you are going to let them breed.
Have Gouldians and societies and fledglings of all of the above!!
A few parrotlets, and new shaft-tails!

If the zebras greatly outnumber the strawberry, this will probably end badly. But I have one pair of zebras housed with an owl, CB's, a star, Gouldians, and orange cheeks, and I really don't have any problems. I frequently see mutual preening between the CB's and the zebras too.carmena wrote:Aren't Zebs a bit on the aggressive side for a diminutive Strawberry?brenleigh wrote:I would love a Strawberry finch. Re: which finch species has the best song?
I will vote for strawberry. I hear green singing finch before, they have a nice song, but kinda too loud for me. Listening to green singer makes me think of a fun, crowded place where every body is happy and having fun, while strawberry song reminds me of something gentle, image of green grass field, bamboo forest, or little stream run throught the jungle...all the sweetest and most beautiful scenes from my childhood
. I dont know how everybody enjoy a bird's song, but me, everytime I listen to my strawberries, I found a piece of me, see a whole new story that the bird wanna tell everybody with his son: how many years hehas been living, how many time he escaped from a predator, how many forest or places has he been to...not just sound and melodies, and that, is something we can never hear, or feel from a bird who has been bred in captivity...

2 vietnamese greenfinches, 2 gouldians, 2 javas, 5 strawberries. and still try to have more
