Found 6 Java eggs yesterday while moving the finches from the outside aviary to the indoors for winter.
Glad I checked in the nest... Had never seen either bird go in it...
Mom is sitting tightly, so this is exciting...
Must have hurt her wing while trying to catch her, doesnt look like she's using it very well... Gave extra perches so she could get around better. she is eating so thats always a good sign... I will watch her closely and make sure she is getting better...
BTW... The Gouldian babies are doing well, canary still isnt singing (dont think he likes being in the cage with them) may redo that next week... I miss his song! Anyhow... Two goulds play on the swing for half the day it seems... Funny to watch them
Society babies are hatching too... and the lovebirds should flegde soon... Its just a baby bird nursery over here...lol!

Sounds like you are keeping (or should I say your birds are keeping) very busy these days!
Best wishes for healthy babies everywhere!

It does sound busy there and congrats on the Java eggs
As far as the canary not singing, most times when they moult they do not sing.
The male canary sings for 2 reasons, to call a mate and to annouce to the other male canaries that this territory is taken. In the wild the moulting time does not coincide with the breeding and rearing period. So the male does not need to sing and can retain his energy into moulting.
When I bred canaries I would keep the birds on a natural of a timetable as possible. There would be a couple of months when you would hear no or little song coming from the room even though there were 50 birds housed there. But once the moult was completed and the eggfood provided the room would spring into song with nest and chicks to follow.
Canaries. like gouldians are prone to ASM so do make sure you do not detect the clicking at night. ASM can have a drastic effect on his singing.

Re: Surprise in the nest....
Thanks Liz... Hope you have been well... Let me know if you want me to mail anymore jiffy mix.... I reallly dont mind at all....
As you can see, I have upgraded from my Zeb's...lol!
candace,
Thanks for the info on the canary... I did notice the past few weeks that he has lost several long feathers... Not so much now, but he is just really quiet... Guess I can't expect him to sing all the time...
I am watching the female Jave now more than ever, she kinda looks like she is struggling with the flting. Put some extra perches in so she can get around better. neither are sitting on the eggs now, but i guess incubation isnt needed too much yet...
BTW<<< had two societies lay eggs in one nest... lol. Its a very large rectangular straw house. All babies are hatching and 2 pairs are feeding them... Guess maybe they know who is who? Not sure... But all seems to be going well...
