okay... here I am again with another finch questions... Thanks everyone for putting up with me...
I mentioned the other day while catching my Java's in the outdoor avaiay that I may have hurt the females wing. Well she seems ok, and is eating... Problem is after moving them with nset and eggs into the breeding cage for winter, nobody is sitting on the eggs. They aren't even in the nest at night.
Today is day 3.. What should I or can I do?
thanks,
Adrienne
BTW, read on a java site that they can tolerate temps down to 25 degrees... just not over along period of time... I thought all finches needed to come in once it hit 50 outside. Thats why i brought them all indoors... I know you can cover with plastic and use a heat light, but all had eggs or hatchlings, so I thought best to bring them in...
Should I try and put a few eggs in with the societies? or are the Java's too big of a species for them to take care of?

Re: java's not sitting on eggs
okay.... went and watched, the male was in the nest, not sure for how long.
Looks like the female is stressed or something. She is on a perch, but breathing hard? If something happens to her.. Can he take care or will he take care of the babies? The vet cant get me in til tomorrow? If she is egg bound is this what happens?
What can I do?

Re: java's not sitting on eggs
If you think the hen is just feeling off - put a heatlamp on a part of the cage close to a perch so she can go close to it if needed or she can move away from it if she doesn't want as much heat. Heat is most important. When and how many eggs has she laid?
If you think she could be egg bound (you can search "egg bound" on the forum and see what others have seen and / or gone through), you should remove her to a small hospital cage with a heatlamp, calcium in the water and a drop in her beak (with food and water on or near the floor). She would look really miserable if she is egg bound, perhaps fluffed, eyes closed, wings drooping. She may have trouble perching, if she is on the floor and not moving much - that's a good indication.
Keep us posted.

Re: java's not sitting on eggs
Thanks Liz,
I will add heat.. I am pretty sure there are 6 eggs as of Monday.
She is moving around, it's the weird breathing that's got me worried.
Guess she will be okay. She isnt fluffed or droopy, just only the male going in the nest, which I think is weird.
I will add heat and keep watch... Thanks again.
