Who has these? Do they get a long with Lady Gouldians. I would keep them in my 4x7 foot aviary with my three pairs of Lady Gouldians, 1 pair of Societies, and 1 pair of Scarlet Parakeets. I was offered a trade of the Parrot finches for one of my Scarlet babies (I still have 2 males). The guy also has a black faced fire finch...
Should I get them? Are they good in an aviary mixed with these species?
Thanks

Either one of those would do well with your goulds. I have parrot finches in with my goulds in the aviary and they do well together.

Hey Natalie,
You and I have the same taste in birds. I breed scarlet chested, gouldians, red faced/throated parrot finches....and goldbreast waxbills.
I have had 13 parrot finch chicks this year
They do fine in a mixed aviary but can get extremely aggressive during breeding. I breed one pair to a cage/flight with no other species. But when not breeding they are pretty peaceful. They are beautiful and comical.

Re: Red faced parrot finches?
Thank you both I'm still trying to decide if I want to sell or trade. I have people who will to do both. I could trade for owls, red faced parrots or more gouldians (which I wont do since I have enough). Or I could sell.... It is a tough choice.
Are the parrots hard to keep? What are their different food and nesting requirements? I saw live food in the species description...
Such a tough choice

Re: Red faced parrot finches?
When I got my parrot finches they were eating live food. I continued with mealworms and also offer a dry bug mixture like orlux insect patee. I gradually added shredded boiled egg and decreased the meal worms. A year later all are off live food and I just had 3 chicks fledge this week all on seed, eggfood, millet spray, dried bug mixture.
I do not feed greens or fruits when parents are rearing chicks. But one pair of red throats with 3 chicks will eat half a boiled egg a day.
They nest in the same size nest as gouldians. I have never had a parrot finch toss a chick, Some of my gouldians have. The parrot finches are dutiful nest builders, they like a lot of coco fibers. My gouldians are lousy nest builders. I make a nest for them and they seldom add to it. Parrot finches are much more active than most finches. My gouldians are pretty lazy. Those are the differences I have noticed.
Owls are very simular to gouldians.
Best of luck on whatever you decide, all the choices sound great.
Personally, I would take the money because I have too many birds already.

Re: Red faced parrot finches?
I'm doing the trade today!
I will be getting a young pair of red face parrots for one of my young male scarlets, plus I'm giving the guy $40. I will post pictures later tonight.
I'm excited to get a new species, but not looking forward to quarantining another pair of birds in the house (I already have 2 quarantine cages in the house in separate rooms). Do any of you ever quarantine outside? These birds were raised in an outside flight.
Also, should I treat the new birds for air sac mites? With S76 or scatt? I have both.
Thanks
