:D They will be worth the extra effort. They are cute and personable. And they are worth their poop weight in gold if you need a foster bird

I agree!!! I just had my first ever good experience with a Trio that fostered 4 Gouldian babies for me! They all just fledged this week too, so far so good. :) =D>

Does anyone else also have this problem....?
My societies seem to have a penchant for pooping in their water. When I get home from work, 2 birds will have pooped in their water bowl 4 or 5x!!!! Where as my Lady Goulds might have one or two poops in their water in a week.

What kind of water bowl or bottle are you using? If they can perch on it then they will usually poop in it too, and bathe and drink from it all day long.

I always position my water bottles higher than the perch, so that when they turn around to fly away their little butts are below the water bottle.

I use water tubes so they don't poop in their drinking water.

But they will poop in their bath. I tried to change the water soon as I saw them poop in it, but soon as I change the water, they poop in it again...so I gave up on that as a hopeless cause. I just add ACV (apple cider vinegar) to the bath water to hold down the bacteria and other nasties. And you can't stop them from drinking their bath water.

I have a drinking tube on my flight cage, but not all of the birds seem to use it and I worry that if I remove the bathbowl that the dumbies might dehydrate.

@Megan
The trick that I read about and use with a new bird is, I take the bird and dip the tip of its beak into the water trough of the water tube. This tells the bird that that is where the water is. Then I let it loose in the cage.

Well this problem seems much better now. I don't know what it was the first week or so.... perhaps the change in diet.

They are sitting on eggs and should hatch this weekend!!

No shaftail on eggs..... I seperated those little buggars!

The society finches are the ones I have at school in my classroom.
They have been sitting on some eggs I collected from the aviary. I am not sure what kind..... I THINK they are gouldian eggs.

Anyway, it has been 14 days Friday. They haven't hatched yet.
I went over to the school this moring to check..... haven't hatched.
They are dark... I am soooo hoping they will have hatched by Monday. My students will be so disappointed if not.

My owls were on eggs, but after candling them today they were not fertile. I tossed them and perhaps they will go again.

Oh, sorry Donna, I thought it was the Shaftails and it was the owls instead. Sorry their eggs were not fertile. One of us has to have owl chicks soon...the wait is killing me. Let's start a chant "Owls get busy, we need chicks"

Hope the society eggs hatch so the children will have a surprise Monday. They would love that. =D>
