SOAKED hemp seed?

Post by Animal Quackers » Tue Nov 10, 2009 1:34 pm

Hello,

I have a big bag of hemp seed I received from Bird Supply of New Hampshire. I have been adding a bit every day to the birds' seed mix, but they seem to be having a hard time cracking it! They beak it forever, but I am not sure they are able to crack it because it is so big.

Obviously, the seed is sterile, but if I were to soak it overnight, making it slightly softer, would this make it easier for the fids to eat, and just as nutritious? I'm assuming so, but need to ask the experts!

Thank you in advance!

Hi,
I am not answering your question as an expert but tried and tested
you can soak it and offer your birds

but the most important thing is how to soak and serve it ?

you should rinse up to a few times a day ..rinse and drain again and again...(i do several times a day)(because all moulds are very toxic to the birds )(and I remove the egg food and soaked seeds in a few hours from the food dishes )
if you see any mould you should never give it to your birds.
I always rinse the soaked and sprouted seeds last time with some apple vinegar before i serve the soaked or sprouted seeds to my birds.

Thank you, batuhan! Yes, this is how I soak seed also, lots of rinsing and usually GSE or ACV in the water. NO MOLD HERE!

I just was not sure if others here had a problem getting their finches to crack hemp seed, and if so, how they fed it. I appreciate your taking the time to respond!
