spray millet question
I've been thinking of ordering some bulk millet online, I don't have a huge amount of finches but I do go through alot of millet especially when they have babies. My question is , if I buy 5lbs or 10lbs how long is it good?? I would seal it in a good rubbermaid container of somekind to keep any kind of pests out, but I was just wondering if it spoils or goes bad or whatever. I'm not saving if it goes bad or gets buggie! Thought I would ask here cuz I know many of you by bulk millet. Thanks!

Re: spray millet question
Millet spray is a dried product...so it does not go bad. Though if you keep it in high humidity or it get damp it will mold thus ruining the batch. Keep it dry and you will be fine.

Re: spray millet question
That is a good price for Wisconsin Millet,
Be advised that there are 2 commonly sold spray millets. The wisconsin is usually cheaper and is a dark brownish gold.
The california spray millet is more expensive and a light tan color.
Both are good for finches but many prefer the California...albeit more expensive.

Re: spray millet question
The first time I bought bulk millet, it was directly from the farm in California, and the owner told me to store the millet in the cardboard box it came in, and place it in someplace like a dark closet. I always leave it in the box, but I have sometimes stored the box on the bottom shelf of one of my flight cages.

Re: spray millet question
I have ordered from WSMC and I would never order from there again.
The first shipment I received, the box came completely crushed and destroyed. There was loose millet spilling out all over my floor.
I sent an email with photos complaining, and it took about three weeks before I heard anything back.
By that time, I realized my birds wouldn't touch the stuff.
It was very dark, smelled funny, and the seeds seemed tightly packed on the stalk to where it was too much effort for the birds or something.
I got the combination box, and it just wasn't worth it.
They ended up sending me a replacement for the damaged box, and I literally put it outside for the sparrows and they wouldn't eat it, either!
I order ALL of my millet now exclusively from Emily McLain of Gammy's Finches.
She sells the California Golden Spray Millet at ridiculously good prices, and she makes it a point to get the millet to you for the EXACT shipping cost. She doesn't tack on anything extra, and she will even work it out with you to get the lowest quote possible.
I usually order 10lbs at a time and with shipping it costs me about $42 or so.
PS: If anyone wants to inquire with her, her email is info@gammysfinches.com

Re: spray millet question
I too order mine from there (unless KWcages is having a sale for $50.00 for 25#

Her prices are great and for me the shipping isn't too much, we are somewhat neighbors

While we're at it I also tried Nemeth Farms twice and did not like that either - it smelled really funky, almost sour, both times - birds wouldn't eat it, probably a good thing

Re: spray millet question
To be honest, the best millet I have ever bought has been from the bird mart. And no shipping there......
Also, I can look at it, smell it and not buy it if I don't like it...

Re: spray millet question
We've ordered Kaytee Spray millet (125 ct.) from bird.com on numerous occasions and never have had any problems. Depending on what specials they're running on shipping it's usually somewhere in the 25 to 30 range per box. Here's the link...

No - sorry. This is why I always buy the California millet in the yellow box from Emily in Al. No chances - it is always perfect.dfcauley wrote:No, sorry but that last millet I got from Ivan wasn't very good.MLaRue wrote:Donna,
