My new aviary

Post by HoangQuan » Mon Nov 23, 2009 12:06 am

Hello everyone, I wonder if you guys still remember me :), cuz I've disappeared for a really long time :(, it was my last year to Graduation so things kept getting over my head and I couldnt handle them all :(, miss everybody here so much!!!
My very last posts here were about rats and bad luck and things like that. And I thought I could solve the problems but I couldnt, so I decided to move all my birds away to my friends' house and started it all over again. The old aviary was moved to my little garden, repainted, and checked very carefully to make sure that there're no holes for any kind of predators to come in, and then I planted my favourite kind of plant: bamboo :)
Now everything are almost done and I am not so busy like the last months so I come back here and post it, just want to share with everyone here. Basically, it's not a "new" aviary, but almost, right, new start :P
About the birds, since they're doing so well in my friends'house, I dont tend to take them back(maybe wait for their nearest offsprings from now :) ). So I decided to go buy all new birds. My plan is 1 pair of strawberries, 2 or 3 pairs of gouldians, and 2 or 3 native finches which I can easily find around here, still consider about Zebra and longtail(but finally maybe not)
I can find some green back-red headed gouldian for 70$ per pair, man the price is so high these days :(, and for 80$ I can get a pair of green backed-white breasted-red headed, should I go for it?
here's the photo of my aviary today, not done yet but I am so excited about it :P

I'm happy you back too! I remember reading your posts a long time ago about the rats eating your finches at night. I'm really sorry about all the finches you lost, but I'm really happy you are still going at it and are starting with a new aviary. It looks really great from the pics!

Very nice set up there, and oh... I love strawberry and am exhauted looking for them here in southern california.

What are your native finches? We are paying about same price like you do for normal backed Gouldians here.

Also, just to let you know, two of the biggest blue and silver gouldian breeders here in southern california are from Vietnam. Brilliant people.. :P

strawberry is one of our native finches :P, and in vietnam we can easily find black/white headed munia, the lonchura striata, and lonchura punctulata. there're some kind of seed eaters that is very beautiful like asian golden weaver, too, but I was never succeed in keeping them :(

you are paying about same price I do? :(, I was suppposed to have to pay half that price about 5 months ago :(, things just keep getting more and more expensive.
Thank you so much for the news :P, wish I knew those breeders :P

"Things just keep getting more and more expensive"... That's everyday story I have heard, the reality is when things get expensive people cut back their expense on birds...

Are strawberries abundant in your area? Here a pair could sell for $200 easilly.

Make sure to have your pictures once completed. :)

Her prices were per pair, not per finch. I wish I could find gouldians for $40! The cheapest I've seen gouldians is $60 for normals, $80 for yellows, and for blues and silvers it varies greatly.

Well you better take advantage of that! Split for blue as well? That's a great deal.

I dont know strawberries here are (still) abundant or not, since all the birds are wild-caught and then sold in store, after their breeding season, the number of strawberries I saw in one store can be more than 100 everytime they're available. about the price, I never see strawberries cost more than 20$ per pair.

Sorry but Im male  :P

About the aviary, last month I decide to sketch a new one to fit more perfectly into my yard and then I emailed it to my brother to ask his friend for the cost. It's been a while he hasnt called me back, so I brought my old one down there as you see, but this evening, he called and told me that my sketch was turned into a real aviary  (I didnt even know how much it costed [-o< )
So this is the sketch I did before, maybe I'll give my old aviary away and prepare for the new one is coming :), I havent seen the real work yet but this is the spirit(yay!)

Here are some of my new birds to the aviary:
Gouldian:

This guy is very cute and in perfect condition, he seems to get a little bit over-excited these days, I guess he's asking me for a girlfriend :P. and since the weather here in Hochiminh city this time is unpredictable and getting colder and colder, I wont take the risk realeasing him to the aviary right now, maybe next month, when things get warmer and sunnier :P

And this is one of our native birds: Vietnamese Grrenfinch. This spieces is only existed in vietnam and rare to see in nature, they're very familiar with the wild form of canary in Europe :)
this is the female:

and this is the male one:

Despite being kinda larger than other in size, but they're nice birds with great attitude :D

I also have two fawn societies but forgot to take photo of them  , I'll update later :D
All the birds were given to me from my friends. wow, cant even say how much I love them :D
Now Im waiting for zebra and strawberry.
