Sally, in the Shaftail cage I use Kaytee Cozy Comfort. Target has it for $8.99 a bag. It is small and very soft. You can spead it and pat it down, a little goes a long way but when doing multiple cages it gets expensive.

I do like it under the lovebird's grate, if I pat it down so he can not pull it up through the grate like he can with newspaper which he shreds, putting it nicely in his water cup.

Right now I am back newspaper in my 30 x 18 cages. Aspen was nice but when they fluttered it went all over the floor and it not a good dog snack!

I think that is another one of those products that is recommended to be under a grate. Of course, part of these statments about only using the product with a grate separating the bird from the product may be because the manufacturer wants no liability.

I heard from Oil-dri, and the cellulose product is not available in my area, so I would have to order it. They are sending me a sample, though, so I can see it before I order. It is distributed by a company in N. Carolina.

Sally does Wal Mart carry it in your area? I haven't look in mine yet. I will this weekend. I'll let you know. Let me know once you get the sample what it is like and if you think it is ok to use.

I doubt that Walmart will carry it, as the Oil-dri people said that it is handled by a company called Hagemeyer N.A. based in Raleigh, NC. I would have to order from them. Once I have gotten my sample, I will let you know if I think it would be something you might be interested in. I think this is a fairly new product.

Sally call your WalMart, I called our Super WalMart and they have it in a 25 lb bag for $3.50. Can't beat that.

Is it the cellulose product? Oil-dri told me the cellulose product comes in an 18# bag. My Walmart has the regular Oil-dri granular in 25# bags for $3.50, but that is not the cellulose product. I am interested in the cellulose, as it is not supposed to have any silica in it, like the regular granular.

I am going Wally World in about 2 hours, I'll write down the composition and post it for you. Check back with you soon.

I wonder if Lowes or Home Depot or Tractor Supply have it.

Sally

Both WalMart and Sam's has the silica composition. The package gives a strict warning about inhaling the dust. It can pose a health hazard.

When you get the sample post your thoughts on it, I would be interested in seeing if you think it would work well.

Cindy,

What did you end up deciding on to use for the trays?

For now newspaper with paper towel over it. I change the trays every other day. I also put the seed hoppers in the cages where the birds were messy and tossed seed. They still have a seed bowl, with little in it. I hung the hoppers up higher near an area they like to sit, seems to work better.

I use paper too. I use the rolls you can buy from Uline though, it is easy to use and you don't have to worry about having newspapers and the ink on the paper.

I also line all my cages that have grates in them with paper too. NO poop on the grates. This I change every couple of days and the trays get washed every other week - mostly to clean the seed mess up because there is no poop it stays on the paper.

I used to use a sturdy white butcher paper that came in a roll from Sam's Club. I tried paper towels ontop of the gates in my 30 x 18 cages but the owls and helena would take the edge and try to drag it into the nest. Funny to watch but messy to clean up!

Some of mine will try to do the same  But as much as I hate cleaning grates I always keep the paper on top and yes most of the mess goes right out the cage but I find it does either way so it is just the love hate of having birds to me

Misty, I added more ground Roudybush to the dried eggfood so it is 2/3 roudybush and also started giving them Miracle meal. It seems all the birds like that and they are eating less seeds. Less seed, less clean up.

I can deal with that! Plus the other foods have more nurtitional value. :D
