Clear pictures of my masked grass finches in new home

Post by finchbob » Mon Nov 30, 2009 8:30 am

Thought i'd upload some better pics of my masked grass finches, since the last ones were rubbish. Got a 5 foot bird light going across the room now to brighten it up, and the finches are in the new colony home I built for them.

Don't have exact measurements on hand, length and width are around 2 foot across, width being the lesser of the two, height is around 6 foot. It's not exactly huge for a flight but it's better than any cage for sure. This was my second take on building a movable flight, the first one was bigger but perhaps a little to big, since the flights are indoor the last one was barely fitting into the room they are kept in. I'm much happier with the second smaller flight though, I did a much better job of building it.

The room the birds are in is actually only about 6 foot by 8 foot, it used to be a small bedroom but now it's my bird room. It's freezing cold these days it seems to so they also have a heater running in there, keeping the room at around 72-75 degrees. All the birds seem to like it, before I got the heater I was sometimes finding birds fluffed up in the cold mornings but no more since I got the heater, they have the warmest room in the house by far.

I think I was lucky to get them atall. The breeder I bought them from (uk) said he has tried for years to get some of these and he actually managed to get some in for once, I bought 8 of them for £80 a pair. I've tried my absolute hardest to see if I could find them for sale anywhere else but no place seems to have them. Found a few adverts (years old adverts) for 1 or 2 birds but nothing more.

Unique looking birds. Look as if they're wearing uniforms and standing guard :) Nice looking and healthy.

I bought 3 of these birds once from a pet shop here in BC, Canada called Petland. I only wanted a pair, but could not stand the thought of leaving one lonely finch by itself.

I called them the "Cad Yellow Trio" :D The male had a funny kind of high pitched whistle. Not musical at all, but interesting...sounded like a camera flash warming up! Can't imagine what your bird room must sound like!

Never had babies as the male was missing several toes, but they seemed very happy together, and all three nested together. Had to find a home for my trio years ago, and have never seen the masked finch here since then. I love the sleek look and the warm taupe colours, and of course the cadmium yellow beaks!
