She is an orange head. I was able to compare her to my other two orange heads this morning when they were all on a perch together. Their beaks are EXACTUALLY the same color.

This is so great because Mario had three clutches last year and I did not get one single orange head from him. It seems this time he has produced more hens and they are the ones with orange hens. Just goes to show you that you never know...... they can surprise you no matter what you think they will have.

That is what I am finding so enjoyable about gouldians....endless possibiltities and so many surprizes :!:
Not to mention their sweet little personalities :D They have truly captured my heart.

I hope so. This would be the FIRST orange head I have produced. For some reason all his others have had RED heads.

She is a wonderful little bird and helped to feed the younger gouldians. Either way I am keeping her.

Also, Mario is a lilac breasted bird so I am thinking "maybe" she is too????
Looks RH PB To me..
I say Red Head because her beak is Red.
You can't have a red tipped beak on an Orange head bird..

A Lilac Breast hen will be lighter than a Lilac Breast male - her color to me looks like that of a LB male which leads me to believe she is just PB; though she could be /Lilac due to Mario :)

Yay - I got it right finally! Yet a beautiful bird, Donna! =D>

I know it was hard for me to understand and a couple of my birds surprised the heck outta me.

Let's see if this shows up properly - here's pics of a Red head hen and Red head male - both I thought were orange heads for sure 100% - but nope! Their beaks are red and so are their head colours (officially).

It does get frustrating, Donna. I believe they call this a washed out red head(though it does look orange).... just like sometimes you will get a rudy red head that contains a lot of dark, black feathers, though it is still a redhead.
You have to always go by the beak color....not the head color.

I guess it's just me, but even with the hen in Liz's example, I would never confuse that with an orange head - the head color itself I mean. It still looks red to me.

It seems like yellow hens are the most confusing with the color..
I think it is the way the yellow mingles with the red head color - it plays tricks on your eyes :)

Here she is all finished with her molt. She is so pretty and going to be a wonderful mom as she fed the young juvies from the other birds.

Not exactually orange as I thought, but pretty none the less!
