Oh my goodness...$1100.00 a pair! Talk about sticker shock.

We used to get them for $25.00 a bird.

I have an email address for another person in California, I'll pm you and let you know what they say. This is one kind of bird I would not ship. Stresses extremely easily. There is a breeder in Florida, I just have to locate him.

What happened to the pedal pushers, springalators, and beehive doo?

John, you forgot about the horn rimmed glasses and bright red lipstick...so tourist like!!!!!!! The pedal pushers have to have giant flowers on them. We are going to Hawaii.

I heard back from the man in California, he is not selling pekins. sigh!

The beehive hairdo...the hair dresser could not do, my hair needs to grow a bit more for the width, so the finches are going to have to find somewhere else to nest until we can do it up right!!!!!!

Thank you Bill...I really appreciate your help. Tampa is not far. The last HQ 13221 cage I got was from the fleamart. It is a good solid cage, I paid 64 for it a few years ago.

I think that was one I paid like 75 a few years ago they do carry the cheaper imports also but I would stick with the HQ might be a little more but worth it

I agree HQ quality is every bit worth it. I love this cage. The two doors allow me to clean the bottom, feed while the birds flutter and perch at the top. They have one that has a door in the middle of the front panel but it is up higher and you have to reach in and down to get dishes and clean, it upsets the birds to much. I also love the double flight cage.

Bill, this shop is 15 minutes from me, I have bought supplies from her before and bought my cage from her husband at the other shop.

She wants $129.00 for the HQ 13321 cage, the cheapest so far was $119.00 from Birdcomfort.com but that does not include shipping

Everythingbirds.com wants $279.99 for the double flight cage HQ 16421, Bird Comfort wants $219.00 plus shipping.

That is good ,still keep checking on cragslist some good buys somtimes.I keep my goldbreast in a 24in breeding cage at this time but plan on putting in a larger flight soon.

I checked out a total of 8 places on line and Everything Birds and Bird Comfort has the best prices so far, I am not done searching though. I will let you know what I find out.

I had a pair of Red Headed finches about 10 years ago...they were relatively peaceful in a mixed aviary. They did breed for me; however, they never raised their young to fledgeling. Part of it may have been a lack of mealworms on my part. I wasn't consistent enough and they tossed or stopped feeding, I can't really remember.

I have been emailing a man that was well known for raising them, the mealworms are the key. Also providing a wooden nest box for them. I'm still looking cages up I would like to but them something larger than the 30 x 18 they are resting in now.

John should be getting his pair soon, as soon as the weather both here and there is warm and clear enough for 3 days to send them. I am also sending him my Orange Cheek, he has 2 pairs in an aviary and they will be happy to fly with his, they need a flock.

I have them in separate cages since one female favors one of the males, if the other female gets close to him she runds her off. They are paired nicely. I can hear them slightly from the other room when I am in the main room. My zebra, owls, societies and shaftails are louder than the red heads.

I offered boiled egg and meal worms yesterday and they didn't touch it. I think they need to settle in a bit yet.

When they sat on eggs were they flighty if you approached or did the sit tight? What was your clutch size?

Hey Cindy,

They were pretty tight sitters and I believe they laid a clutch of 3-5 eggs. When I had them I was young and in High School so I wasn't available to provide enough mealworms for them....I'm sure If I did they would have raised their young with no problem.

They look very hardy and are so quiet. They were flighty at first but calmed down quiet a bit. They sleep in the silk plants, as soon as the open faced nest boxes arrive I will give them one to sleep in, did yours roost in plants or a box?

Mine roosted in a bamboo nest I think.
