One Yellow Male Canary!

After all that worrying about canaries...and I was willing to take all 3 canaries that were available for adoption...I ended up with just one. Turns out that the female was healthy enough to be sold after all. And the Red Factor male has more health issues and is on Baytril again ...

...but the gouty (I think) Yellow male got a clean bill of health from the avian vet, with an excellent prognosis...so I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Need to get him some branches for his temporary cage...might try vetwrap around part of the branch...might be easier for his bad foot...

I don't normally do much naming of the finches (as you guys know)...but I named this guy Mondegreen.

Anyone know what that is (I didn't!)...without looking it up???

...heh...funny you asked for pictures!

First of all...I bought him (and the other finches) their very own travelling cage...just because I felt like it...my parrot travelling cages are too big.

And here he is! Doesn't look overly stressed despite the cats. I suppose hearing other birds helps.

Another shot, you can see he has some grey/black feathers on his head.

And a closeup of his gibbled foot. Anyone else think it's gout? Or if anyone knows anything else about what this could be? Love to hear from you! Notice the thickened redness around the sole (?)and the back toe that sticks straight out. The two outer toes don't grip properly either.

Oh wow - vet wrap! You just solved a problem for me - thanks Rue!!!! (I have a chick just weaned with really bad feet who perches on the backs of his legs - vet wrap would make it much easier!)

BTW, canary is a real cutie. Congrats!!!

Rue, your canary is very pretty. So cute with some dark feathers on the top of his head.

That traveling cage you bought - I love it. I bought it a few weeks ago and I do not know how many times I used it already. Such a helpful little thing. Sometimes I place my birds in there for half an hour when I clean their cage or .... when our Zebra is not behaving when a new fid is introduced to the family, she goes in there for 15 min. When I return her back into the cage, it is like a miracle - she stops chasing the new finch.

I love that traveling cage. I hope you will find it very useful too.

Thanks everyone! He seems just fine today! Eating...pooping...chirping...no full blown song yet though!

One of my parrots has already picked up on his 'cheep cheep'

They're in separate rooms too!

The carrier is actually very nicely designed for little critters...just wish I had another cover option...like, well, let's think now...

The new guy looks good. Love his coloring.

I have a canary hen who would come down with gout whenever she ate eggfood. I've had her two years. She has been in an indoor aviary for the past year and seems to be doing much better as she hasn't had a bout for nearly a year now. She still eats eggfood, but I think the increase in exercise as kept the gout at bay.

Your bird's foot/toes do not look like my hens did when she had gout. Her toes would swell up and were bright red. The veins running up her leg were bright red also. I know it must have been quite painful as she would tuck the leg up under her body and was reluctant to put weight on the foot.

Looking at the photos I would suspect your bird perhaps is suffering from something other than gout. Maybe bumblefoot. What did the vet have to say about it?

I don't have the full vet reports. The first vet treated the initial flareup - he was in the vet clinic for a few days as well...

And the 2nd vet - that he saw this past Monday - gave him a clean bill of health (for the moment of course) and an excellent prognosis....

It's not bumblefoot I don't think...there are no sores...and the redness and swelling go a little up the leg as well.

I did a little more searching and found that gout can be brought on by malnutrition as well...

Right now he's just on the packaged canary seed. I know he didn't get canary seed before, he was fed finch seed.

I'll slowly start adding other foods to his diet and see what happens.

is it a harzts roller.canary as they have the same stance on the perch...canaries when they are young do have an awful lot of foot problems due to being in the nest for so long there toes get bent back and forth and the tendons set them in one particular place but they can be retified if you are vigilant when they are younger obviously this bird has had problems but no one has bothered to do anything . nice bird though ...buff feathered of course
