Looking for finch breeder in NY

Are there any finch breeders in Buffalo, NY, area?
I would prefer to buy directly from a breeder instead of a petstore.

Also, did anyone hear about a finch breeder called Brecken, Bricken.... I might be not spelling this name correctly. I just overheard it in a store and Google did not bring any results.

Frustrating ain't it?

I have had no luck find breeders near me, thus I'm stuck buying from petshops.

Well if you want to take a little drive up to Canada, this is where I got my budgie from, they have a fantastic selection of birds everything from parrots to quail to finches! They also apparently ship

It IS frustrating - I haven't had any luck finding a private breeder of finches or canaries in Western New York or the Finger Lakes area. I would love to collect more Strawberry Finches. My little Shakti is the most adorable bird and his song is heavenly.

I bought my Canary from Birds Unlimited in Penfield, NY. They have a website but I can't remember the address at the moment. That store is run by a man that knows his birds. The birds were, clean, socialized and friendly and I've been very pleased with my canary. He had a nice selection of gorgeous Gouldian finches and his Zebras were reasonably priced at eleven dollars each. Paul did not have a breeder that he could obtain Strawberry finches from (I asked). What is exceptionally nice is that you are given information with your purchase and Paul goes through the checklist with you to make sure that you will do your best by the bird he is selling.

Although I would rather adopt from a rescue program there are not a lot of finches available. I did adopt thirteen from a Rochester, NY rescue. Of course, these birds are not to be bred since they were adopted. I'm enjoying them very much.

Hm, I guess I am putting another finch on my wish list.

I did not know Strawberries make such pleasant noises. What kind of sound do they make?

I am only familiar with Zebra, Society and Shaft-tail's chirping.

I think the correct name for the Strawberry finch is an Avadavat. They are a waxbill. Shakti was one of the finches that came with the group I adopted. He is tiny and very cute. He spends a lot of time sitting on the floor of the cage, which concerned me at first. It just seems to be where he likes to sit because he is alert and active and healthy. He loves the Twin Beaks Herb Salad that I have free-choice in the cage. He is always picking at it.

His song consists of very high pitched whistles as a calling note and then a gorgeous clear-toned song that resembles a German Roller Canary song in some ways. Very sharp and clear.

In the earlier spring he was the first one "up" and that high pitched tone was better than an alarm clock!

I'm glad that Birds Unlimited is fairly close to you. It was so much nicer to find birds there than in a Pet Depot or Petsmart. If you purchase a bird from Paul he will also give you lifetime nail clipping if you are shy about doing it yourself. I was impressed how he handled the birds and they were very calm and trusting when he held them. I had to walk quickly away from those gorgeous Gouldians! I have absolutely NO ROOM for any more finches. I should have gotten the double flight cage that Steve Pax purchased instead of the single that I bought

I love my Strawberrys. Until last night I had a pair. Sadly my hen has died of a prolapse. MR. Berry wakes us up nearly every morning at 5am with a loud whistle.

Not for everyone, but I enjoy it. They spent alot of time hopping around on the bottom of my aviary, so yours seems to be acting normally.

Oh tammieb I'm sorry about your Strawberry hen.

I hope your Mr. Berry doesn't stop singing because he's lost his mate.

I'm glad to know the Strawberrys spend time at the bottom of the cage. If my Zebras were doing that I'd be worried and I was worried about Shakti for quite awhile.

Shakti is my little escape artist too - he ZOOOOOOMED by my face one day when I was changing the water and went to roost in my orange tree by the window. He was so cute but I caught him and put him back in the cage.

No...not at the moment. I knew Shakti needed a proper name so I looked at baby names with Indian/Hindi reference.

Anneka....I am reading some OLD, OLD forum messages and came across your message below. I live in Buffalo 6 months a year, the other 6 I live in Florida. I will be home soon, but, I always have at least a couple of Gouldian finches with me when I return to Buffalo. I currently have 3 juveniles - born last January so they're not feather yet.
