Parrot Finch Question (and pied parrots)

Post by carmena » Mon Jan 04, 2010 5:22 pm

So I have read with great interest the posts on this forum about Elvis the pied parrot finch and think they are simply gorgeous!!
I found a fellow about an hour away that has several pied parrot finches and I saw the pics and have fallen in love with them. BUT I have NO idea if his prices are fair. I know these guys aren't cheap but he says
-----------
heavy pied parrot finches 180.00 to 250.00 ea depending on amount of pied discount for 3 or more...
------------------

Is this highway robbery or is that about right?
They are ridiculously beautiful. I have never seen pieds at the local fairs.
Have Gouldians and societies and fledglings of all of the above!!

A few parrotlets, and new shaft-tails!

That's about right. I have bought finches from Jorge Valera from Davie, Florida. He has ads all the time for gouldians online. He has about the best prices I know of. Here is a pic of my pied boy. I am hoping some of his chicks get some pied.
He is what I consider light pied though some people call these medium pied....for me to call one medium pied it would have to have more than half yellow as opposed to green. Mine has less but I like the combination. Also they tend to get more yellow with adult moults.

Donna, You have first dibbs if I ever get some pied chicks :| I too like a mix of the red, yellow and green :D

If I understand correctly, if you have a normal paired with a pied you will get normals, split to pieds and pieds...but probably light pied. I bred mine with a seagreen... not planned he just fell in love and mated within 3 minutes of being in the aviary :? One chick looks normal and the other has one pied marking. A perfect round yellow ring around it's vent opening  But these chicks are also split for seagreen :D
The male will soon be paired with one of my hens that was produced last year. She looks normal. Her parents were mom- normal and dad- normal with a 3/4 inch splash of yellow that came out on his neck with this years moult. I had no idea he had any pied. Hopefully this female will have that trait and with Mr. Pied maybe make some pied babies :D
