I agree! A beautiful sight....... just wondering how you keep them from interbreeding?

Re: Goldbreast
You can't but you can exchange a percentage of your stock every year to ensure that the gene pool gets somehow refreshed.
contrary to our human values, interbreeding doesn't necessarily lead to deformities, it's only when interbreeding is excessive that it can create problems.

Donna I started with 5 unrelated pairs. I then added another at a later date. As they produce I collect the chicks before they color out for sale. That takes 1 month to 4 months. So it is a no brainer.
The one problem with colony breeding is the young can not be gauranteed to be unrelated. So I sell this way... If you want a definate non related pair from any breeder make sure they breed in seperate aviaries. I have started this but the pairs in the other aviary have not bred. Or buy a male from one breeder and a female from another.
Also I did order some closed "A" size bands that I will start banding with...they will actually stay on. I had tried the colored bands but they just fell off their tiny little legs

This spring I plan on putting a pair in each of the aviaries so I should be able to offer several gauranteed different bloodlines. Also I have made arrangements to swap out some young for other bloodlines.. even with a forum member here

Have yours reproduce yet? Maybe a swap in the future?
Here you can see the difference in the colors from the adults to the young... it is very easy to tell them apart.

Thanks, I love a single species flock also. These birds become very calm and brave. The safety in numbers thing. Also there seems to be no agression. No one bird on the lowly pecking order. They have lots of room and get along great. The interactions and songs are wonderful.

As far as inbreeding. I do catch the young before the beak turns red and they get thier full colors. I like to sell or swap out for new bloodlines.

Re: Goldbreast
Yes, mine have bred for me one time and produce and raised three little babies. They are the cutest and tiniest things ever. But they haven't bred in a year for me.
I love these birds. They are very calm and sweet. I have never seen any agression with my pair.
