Re: Reusable cage liners?
Anyone tried the fake grass look? I did use it outside the cages to stop seed bouncing all over the floor, it holds the seed really well. Think I will try one piece in one cabinet and see how it works for a couple of weeks.

Another solution is butcher paper in a large roll, pre cut the paper and stack so you have it on hand. Sam's sells a large roll of white.
or...unfold the newspaper, stack it and use the tray as a template, trace and cut. Put several layers in the tray. As they dirty the top layer peel a few sheets away to expose a clean sheet. This works great and is a time saver!

I like the fake grass look idea. Keeps up with seed shells and washable. Will have to check into it.

Ray you are funny. I used to use seasand with shell grit years ago when we could still obtain it from the beach. Now its illegal to collect, so no more of that.
When I have a cage setup I use newspaper too. Easy and free here. I don't even pay for the local paper which is delivered. Cannot think of an easier or cheaper substitute for that.

Re: Reusable cage liners?
Back in the day when we raised leopard geckos we tried all kind of substrates. We even tried the vinyl drawer liners that come in a roll, we would cut them and make extra to replace soiled ones. They come in different colors and textures.
Prior to using we would cut them, soak them in a vinegar and water soluton and rinse well, set in the sun to dry and air out.
To wash and clean we would soak in a mild bleach, a capfull to a gallon of water solution rinse well and set in the sun to dry. The sun help to break down any bleach residue. Caution with the liners, if they are not cleaned with some type of solution to kill bacteria it could result in complications for the animal. The same with the fake reptile grasses.
Eventually we went back to butcher paper, it was easier for the young to catch crickets. The older geckos had bark. For certain reptiles like uromastyx and shield tailed agamas we used organic potting soil and playground grade sand for sandboxes (WalMart very inexpensive)
I may try the sand on the bottom of the trays which are under grates. It is under $10 for a large bag. I believe home depot carries it also.
