New Finches!!!

Post by earlybird09 » Wed Jan 20, 2010 11:45 am

Well I have added a new pair of finches to my flock! Cut-Throats! They are beautiful birds and so calm and affectionate to one another! I love there sounds, so much more peaceful sounding then the zebras high pitched beep! I just got done setting up there large cage with greenery, a large stick nest, food, water, eggshells/mineral powder/cuttlebone, and of course eggfood! Right now they are both in there nest, first the female went in and soon the male followed and last time I checked they were both peering out together, to cute!

I got them from a local breeder here, first breeder I have ever bought from and paid $80 for the pair. His two pairs are wild caught, two different pairs so that was how I was able to get a un related pair. He said his raised there babies solely on eggfood so that was a breath of relief!! :D I PROMISE pictures will be up soon once they get settled in a bit more! I am so excited!! :D

Congrats! New birds are always so exciting. Sounds like yours are settling in just great. That is an interesting species--if I had any room, I'd love to have a pair. Looking forward to photos.

Very Nice...the female cut throat looks very much like the Red Headed female. They are from the same family of finches. Good luck with them and I'm glad they are getting use to their new home.

I used to have a pair but not any more. They were my first finches and I really loved the male's color and pattern. It is a beautiful bird with a funny song. The male was very affectionate with the female but she wasn't. Sometimes I think I should've kept them, especially that the price for one now is $80 here in canada (I paid $70 for both just over a year ago). You might hear that they're aggressive birds but I found nothing aggressive about them. I had them with Strawberry finches and they lived togather just fine and actually the two female strawberries took over the nest that was used by the cut-throats. I have a pic of a Strawberry and the male Cut-throat sitting in the small nest togather and will keep that pic as a proof that my pair were never aggressive, but I do believe it all depends on the individual bird too.
