Society Finch Q

Hello!
I am new to the forum. As a hobby I have taken up breeding finches here and there. As a graduation present I received a male and female gouldian. However, they were purchased from a local pet store and I had had problems keeping my hen perky and thriving since the day I was able to bring them home. This past week she passed away. Since I live in a rural area it will be awhile before I can find a good, quality, healthy hen. I was concerned about my cock being alone so I found a society finch to share his cage (don't worry, it's plenty big!). I was concerned this would be an amature mistake that would lead to fighting but so far they are getting along great and perching next to each other. The cock quarrels less with the new society finch than he did with his mate.

So this leads to my question. How do you sex a society finch? I'm really enjoying the behavior I'm seeing in the society finch and I think they may be fun to breed. As part of my hobby I occasionally steal a fledgling zebra finch to hand raise and, after what i've seen, I think that society finches might be better. As the zebras reach adulthood they are less accepting of contact and are happy just to sit on my shoulders without being touched or bothered. I wonder if a society would be a little more "cuddly", for lack of a better word.

ANYWAY- long story short. How do you sex a society?

As for telling the sex it is very hard but if you see the societie sing its a male

There is not mistaking the song of a male society. They love to sing and will sing away......
If your's is not singing I would imagine it to be a hen.

Thanks for the link! I'm pretty sure it's a hen after listening to that. She isn't especially chatty; just calls here and there.
