My Strawberry male has escaped three times when I was trying to catch him to move him to a larger cage, and I also had a Goldbreast escape thru a 1/2" wire cage. Luckily, I got them back. The first time I didn't even realize the Strawberry had gotten out until I saw him perched on the curtains! It was a large cage and there were also 3 Societys flying around in it. I thought perhaps he scooted passed my arm and I didnt see it. The second and third time, I witnessed him just zoom straight thru the wire. As hard as they are to find, I don't want to lose the one Strawberry male I do have, plus, I don't want him injured, that's why I opt for smaller size wire gap. Larger finches would probably do well in the 1/2" wire, I tend to be more cautious and lean to the smaller, more secure size.

Surely its impossible for a zebra finch to escape 1/2" x 1/2" mesh.
Ouch! I made a mistake, I was thinking about 1/2" bars, not net

Judy the subject is wire mesh. 1/2"x1/2" not 1/2" wire cages. However I have never had a problem with escaped birds in 1/2"x1" welded wire. But I would think that a fledgling GB could easily fit through it.
