Air Sac Mites

Post by KNG5 » Sun Jul 08, 2007 11:55 pm

Is there anything I can buy locally to treat air sac mites? Especially if it's safe for baby birds. I dont want to have to buy over the internet and wait several days (especially since i'm going out of town soon).

Those bird protectors do nothing to ward off mites and lice, but they DO release vapors which are toxic to birds. They are a bad, bad idea.

You could order some SCATT online and treat the birds when you get back, maybe?

Look for Ivomec. It will treat airsac mites. I'm not real sure about treating baby birds but if you can hear them wheezing it might be worth a try. You should be able to find it locally but it is pretty pricy. There is a website out of CA that sells it in small bottles for pretty cheap (like $3 a bottle) and shipping. He has great birds out there too. I've been to his place.

Hope this helps,

Be careful with the Ivomec - it can be easy to overdose on small birds such as finches.

Good to know on the Bird Protector contraption...i've never used one, but it is the one thing that is more readily available in big chain pet stores.

Shame on the pet stores if it is so ineffective and dangerous.
