Sad News

Post by KNG5 » Sun Jul 08, 2007 6:55 pm

Well I just got back from the lake and saw that one of the gouldian chicks had died, so now there's only two. The crop looked like it had been filled with air. Im not sure if that's just because it was dead or what. I also dont know how long it had been dead but it didnt look very good. I just hope that the parents will continue to feed the remaining chicks. I'm leaving for Florida for a week on Friday the 13th...so Im kind of nervous.

Oh, sorry to hear that. I've gotten used to losing a chick every so often, especially when they're young - I think Mother Nature knows more than we do when it comes to whether a chick is really healthy or not. I hope the other two are well-fed and growing well? Will anybody be checking on them while you're gone?

I'm down to one chick. The one that died (I'm guessing overnight) had a crop FULL of air. Like it was huge. I have no idea what could have caused this, but I'm taking to and the remaining baby to the vet today to see if they know what's wrong...

There are fermenting yeast (candida) which will cause the crop to fill with air; I imagine the bloat can put a lot of pressure on the blood supply from the head.

Candidiasis is unfortunately fairly common in finches.
