Re: Do you have an aviary?
Thank you, thats most kind!
At the moment there's just eleven zebs, three zebra nestlings and a rescued greenfinch that cannot surivive outside so he has joined the party!!
Heres the greenfinch with a young zeb which sadly didn't survive a few weeks ago.

I've three female zebs, a pied, a grey and a fawn one, and six grey chestnut flanked males and two beige CFs.

Its stuffed full of nest pods for the cold weather.

Does that heating use up a lot of electricity?Marvin wrote:Thanks for the comments. I was really nervous when the temperature dropped but worked from sunrise to sunset at the weekend making the blinds and putting emergency heating in. The blinds are easily taken on and off as tey just slot onto bolts through holes drilled in the timber batons.
I use an 800W oil filled radiator which keeps the chill off the air and there are seven nest boxes in the inside flight so enough shelter for all of the finches if need be.
I am seriously no sort of expert and just finding my way carefully with the finches!!

Hi
It shouldn't use too much electricity, its only an 800W radiator so I wouldnt' have thought its that expensive to run.
It did ensure my birds survived the coldest winter for many years, so worth every penny......haven't had the electric bill yet though!

Re: Do you have an aviary?
Here's our 99%-finished indoor aviary.
It's 6' tall (total), a little over 3' wide, and about 28" deep. Wish we could have made it wider, but that's all the space we have in my office. It's got 3 doors on each side: 2 at the bottom and 1 towards the top. There's a removable tray (also has hinged doors on both sides) that'll be lined with newspaper. It'll have a light on top, too, but we haven't made it back to Lowes to buy one yet. The background is hand-painted -- I took a crash course in painting leaves and flowers - LOL!
The perches and other stuff are going to be added this evening, and we hope to get it moved into my office and put the birds in it in the morning (Hubby's off work tomorrow - yay!).
Hubby wants to build a wider aviary to go on the half-wall between our living room and kitchen, but that's further down the road (and we'll have to take down our 120-gallon aquarium first - joy joy!).
Anyway, here are the pics.

This is terrific Moonrise! Tell your hubby he did a nice job. Like the "one-stroke" leaves on the back.moonrise wrote:Here's our 99%-finished indoor aviary. It's 6' tall (total), a little over 3' wide, and about 28" deep. Re: Do you have an aviary?
Hi Crystal, I have a 28' X 17' outside aviary. Sorry I don't know how to load pic's onto this forum yet. You can go to my web site at http://www.freewebs.com/finchesathome to see pics. If you would like to feature my aviary, I would be happy to send you pictures.

Crystal wrote:I am looking to add an "Aviary of the Month" section to my website (finchinfo.com), so if you have an aviary that you would like to have featured, please let me know.
In order to be a participant, you will need to provide some photos of your aviary (preferably large/high quality photos, taken from various angles) and a description of how it was built (if known). You may also wish to include diagrams or drawings detailing its construction, your favorite and least favorite aspects of your aviary (i.e. if you wished you had done something differently when building it to make it better/easier to access/etc.), and any general tips or building material recommendations. The more information, the better.
Chosen aviaries will be featured on the main page of the site with a link to the full article for a month. After the month, the photos and article will be moved to the "building your own aviary" section under "housing" so that your article will always be available for readers to locate. Credit of course will be given to you (so be sure to include your name/location/e-mail/website info--whatever you want to go with your article & photos).
Thanks!
