What birds do you have that eat the Bag o Bugs? I could never get mine to eat it?
The nestling foods - do you use this instead of something like Miracle Meal eggfood?

Some of mine did not go for it to well but I found this while looking for something else so I posted it just incase someone wanted to use it in egg foods, serve it to parents with young...20 lbs of dried bugs!
I was looking for a site that had zoo grade pellets with insects and other good stuff in it.

For those who have not used this product before - the bugs are really big for finches (to me).
Even my Grenadiers and Cutts wouldn't touch them.

if you grind it it may work if blending it into boiled egg foods.

I already do enough "birdy favors" - not grinding the bugs too!cindy wrote:if you grind it it may work if blending it into boiled egg foods.

Re: Bulk Bag O Bugs and Nestling foods with dried insects
I mix the bag of bugs with the nestling food (it contains bugs and fruit). I also mix in some eggfood, either miracle meal or ABBA nestling, and orlux insect patee, and lately some new bugs stuff I got form LGF.com. I mix it all together and store it in the freezer except what I will use up in a week or two. All my parrot finches eat it. I feed the breeders and the growing chicks...and last years chicks that are going through a moult. I think with the bag O bugs mixed with the other stuff does break into smaller pieces...but I have seen them carry a big ole bug up to the nest when feeding young.

Candace, how do you freeze you mix? Do you have one of the machines that remove all the air from the bag and seel it for you or do you use regular freezer bags and sueeze the air out?
I've been freezing everything I usually mixx together separately, remove the bags from the freezer, let them warm and then mix it together.

Re: Bulk Bag O Bugs and Nestling foods with dried insects
Just normal freezer zip loc bags.
I use to use my sealing bag for the stuff I sold out of my store to keep it fresh on the shelf. But with the freezer storage it stays plenty fresh with just what air I squeeze out. I usually take stuff out of the freezer and fill up my canisters except for the bugs.
The bug mix once removed from the freezer will then be kept in the fridge. I find with very little heat the mixture smells bad and the finches don't seem to like it as much.

Re: Bulk Bag O Bugs and Nestling foods with dried insects
Thank you Candace. I imagine the bugs could spoil quickly if left out for to long after freezing/defrosting.
