Purple or lilac or what??

Post by newlinta » Sat Mar 20, 2010 11:44 pm

I got a RH-OH/PB-WB/silver male recently...the breeder is calling him a "rose" breasted silver. He is definitely a male as I've been watching him sing and dance since I put him in the aviary.

parents...OH/"rose breasted"/YB-BB hen and RH-OH/WB/sf Silver male

All my other PB males have the same deep, rich purple color...his is much closer to that of all my PB hens.

Are your silver PB males lighter in color than GB or YB males?

Would you say he is a lilac breast or just PB?

with the flash his color is closer to the OH/PB male in the back...
Image

Without the flash(and more true to the actual color)his color is much closer to the hens I have

Any thoughts would be appreciated...
Thanks!

Lilac for sure - he is BEAUTIFUL!!!

Such a pretty head :)

Lilac and Rose are synonymous and really just create even more confusion than there already is!
There are only three true breast color alleles: purple lilac and white.

But there are variations of the depth of lilac color which causes some people to visually name them something different though genetically they are the same. :)
Similar to how some dilutes are visually lime-green and others lemon-lime, it's just a variation in the color but genetically they are the same :)

Pretty bird. :D

Not meaning to steal the post but I have this male gouldian that I thought was a PB. I was told that it appeared lighter than normal because the bird was a DF silver. Is this a lilac also? What do you think about the female? P or L. I was told again that it was so light due to the fact that the hen is silver.

The male I would say does look like a lilac but the hen looks like a purple. My lilac hen's, though I don't have any any more, always had a really pale breast color, pink looking. Your hen in the picture looks like the same tint as the regular purple breasted hens in the picture. It's so hard to tell from pictures :( VERY nice looking birds no matter what they are though!

Candace,
I'm still learning all this, but yours sure looks alot like mine...I'd say he is a lilac. The hen I'm not sure about.

Yes, I am learning too. The breeder that I got mine from said they were some purples and some lilacs in the bunch I bought.(35 assorted colors) I have been trying to sort them out. Never been around silvers....never even seen one at the stores so I have been going by the pictures on the internet.
It sure is a beautiful mutation though. Yours is just glowing :D
