egg, organic or not ?

Post by ac12 » Mon Mar 22, 2010 4:57 pm

Does it make a difference for egg?
I can see for veggies, as insecticide and other "stuff" easily is on the leafs, but not sure about egg.

The non-organic egg here is about half the price of the organic egg. If it does make a difference I will continue w the organic egg, but if not, I would like to switch to non-organic egg, as it is starting to get a bit expensive as I have multiple cages to do.

I only have 2 birds, and they eat very little fresh eggfood. They prefer the dry commercial eggfood. So I can't say that regular eggs are safe or not, or that organic is better or not. I just use free run, (not free range), but because I prefer them for myself but not as costly as free range. :D

Organic eggs are produced by hens fed certified organic grains without most conventional pesticides and fertilizers. Growth hormones and antiobiotics are also prohibited. Organic eggs have the same nutritional content, fat or cholesterol as regular eggs.

Egg nutrition

• A large egg contains 70 calories, 6 grams of protein, and 5 grams of fat, of which 2 grams are saturated fat. The white contains most of the protein, and the yolk has all the fat.

• Eggs are excellent sources of nutrients including vitamin B12 and the antioxidant lutein, which is important for healthy eyes.

• Research on the effects of the 212 milligrams of cholesterol in a large egg has shown no association between eating one egg a day and heart disease for the healthy person. But remember to account for eggs in other products — cakes, cookies and pasta for example — if counting dietary cholesterol is important to your health.

• Omega-3-enhanced eggs contain substantially more heart-healthy DHA than regular eggs. These eggs come from hens fed a special diet.

• Organic and conventional eggs are equally nutritious.

It is the effect of pesticides and similar nasty stuff that I would be concerned about making its way down the food chain.

I have honestly never bought the organic eggs, however, all we eat here are the Omega-3 enriched eggs.....by we I mean the fids as well as the kids. I have not seen any negative effects on my family by not eating the organic eggs.

If you can find someone local that has yard eggs, they are the BEST you and your birds can eat! The best eggs come from hens that are allowed to pasture some...they have the highest nutritional content as well. The color and taste of store VS home grown eggs is insane. Yard eggs should be almost golden in color compared to the pale yellow store eggs. I can taste a huge difference between the two....even in stuff like cakes that are made with fresh yard eggs. I can't hardly stand to eat store eggs anymore. I guess I'm a bit of an egg snob  I cannot for the life of me find this article that explains all the benefits of yard eggs but i'll keep looking.

Yard eggs are usually cheaper than the organic eggs at the store. Fortunately for me, my cousin has a flock so I get them for free. I also have my own chickens but they are the smallest in the world (seramas) their eggs average about 17 grams.....not so convenient for eating lol. Also, considering I have sold 6 of their eggs for $60 on ebay...not so economical to eat them either.

Check the local feed stores and see if they sell them or know anyone who does. Also craigslist is a good place to look. Take a look in the farm/garden section.

Since I am going thru from 9 to 12 eggs a day right now, I just get the regular eggs from whoever has them on sale. I probably should get my own chickens, but then I'd need a dozen chickens, right? One egg a day per chicken = 9 to 12 chickens. There is a field trip for one of my clubs to a place in Dallas that makes these portable coops--you just keep moving the coop around your yard, and the chickens fertilize your yard one area at a time!
