That was my thought also. Thanks for the reply.

It seems you have found something that works with your birds - both species.

I have been keeping the splendids for about 10 years and they sleep fine even with a florescent light left on close to the floor. Most of my grasskeets tuck thier heads like the gouldians. They probably just hear you come into the room and then wake up.

I believe blue light may be the best option. In the wild birds only have moonlight during the late hours, blue light is probably the closest you will get to moonlight. In a future aviary I plan to have my lights on a timer. White light for daytime, yellow light for dusk, and dim blue light for night time. Daytime will be the longest of course, dusk will be 30 minutes to an hour, I haven't decided, and then the moonlights will turn on for the entire night. This will be useful to the birds, but I mostly want to do this for aesthetic purposes. I had a fishtank with automatic moonlights and it was stunning to look at during the nighttime even though the fish were all asleep.

Candace thanks for your reply. It's good to know. I guess as long as they are quiet and pearching without moving one can assume they are sleeping. So I'll leave the white night light on at 209 watts as they seem to be ok this way.
Candace also want to know how you Splendid are doing?
Have you had any breed yet?
I have just separated my splendid pairs to their respective cages. Haven't given them nest boxes yet as they are only 12 months old. Will wait another month before introducing the nest box due to their age and the fact that I want them to be use to the smaller breeding cages that they are in. Also some are still moulting and should finish in a month or so.

Chris,
I lost a few birds late fall, wet and humid enviroment got the better of them as best as I can tell what got to them. They are back inside now and I have 4 pair set up in breeding cages. So far eggs but no chicks. Though this evening before lights out I checked the boxes and one has laid a fresh batch (3 so far) of eggs.
Best of luck with yours. If I remember correctly you got the blues didn't you?

Hey Candace,
Yes I have the blue back white fronted and also par blues. I also have a normal colour male. Hopefully in a few months I'll be able to get a pair of Lutino splendids.
I'm breeding in triple stackable cages that are 40" long and plan to hang the nest box on the outside of the cage. Same box that you have on your photos. Only thing is the bottom of the triple stackable cage is really low to the floor. Hopefully the pair will be ok with that. They seem to be calming down from me moving them there and are accepting being so low on the stackable cages.
One thing I want to ask you about cleaning the cages with them nesting. Do you find they still sit tight or easily get spooked out of the nest box? What about if you go into the room will they be easily spooked out of the nest box?

These are calm birds. With the chicks I had the parents would let me look in the nest box and they never abandoned the chicks.
Now if I can just get some fertile eggs

Candace as I recall you had your cages high up on a shelf. Perhaps this is the reason why they are so calm for you as they feel more secure at that level.
As for the clear eggs might it be that your pairs are young?
