Good news about a foster egg 4/5

Patches is now a proud father of 2 little fawn chicks, one hatches yesterday and the other hatched today. They have 3 more fertile eggs in the nest. If they all hatch this will be the pairs largest clutch!

Congrats Cindy, but how can you tell that they are fawns?

I peeked!!! They look very light, the fuzz is light tan, the last clutch I could tell early on what was fawn and normal.

No one is sitting and he courts and sings but nothing yet. They have not torn this nest down so that is good! Usually they build and a couple of days later it is torn apart.

That's great news about the fawns. What colors are Patches and Cleo? I found out that Peach and Pumpkin can only give me fawn females and normal/fawn males. It's genetically impossible to give anything else since females can't be split for fawn.

Domenic both look normal and Patches the male has a fawn back. The mother, it was my understanding carries the fawn gene...oh Nagabit where are you? We have questions for you.

Very sad, I checked the nest this morning and the two little ones had food in their crops, this afternoon both were passed away in the nest. I checked because the parents seemed upset. The little ones had empty crops. There are 3 more fetile eggs in there, hope they finish sitting. The parents seem more interested in building in the plants. I plan on resting this pair since they have already raised 3 clutches already.

Thank you Candace, I'm not sure what happened since they raised all the other clutches and did a terrif job, never abandoning the clutch. It did get very warm then the temps dropped again to the point the heat went on again the last two morning. Now it is near 80 again.

If the remaining eggs do not hatch then I will remove the box and wait a few months.

Females can't be split for fawn since it is a sex-linked gene. Either a female is fawn or doesn't carry it all.

Domenic, I don't know what or who carries the gene but I get fawns from them. Both parents look normal and I get fawns, I'm not questioning that at all. These are Coco's parents.

I was told though if the female is visually a fawn and you put her with a normal male you'll get fawn offspring. If this is the case I can keep one of their normal split to fawn males and get a fawn unrelated female. Where is Nagabit???? Will this work.

Since fawn is a recessive sex-linked trait, you could only get fawn offspring from that pairing if the "normal" male was split to fawn. If he wasn't split to fawn you could get offspring that were split to fawn (they'd carry it from the female). HTH.

Aww sorry you lost those two Zeb chicks Cindy - hopefully the last 3 eggs will make it through to fledging.
