My green food recipe

Post by lovemyfinch » Tue Apr 06, 2010 8:06 am

Just figured that I would share with everyone the recipe that I have been using based on the greenday diet that Sally brought to our attention.

I have been using kale, dandelion leaves, a brocolli slaw mixture that I found at the supermarket (brocolli, carrots, and red cabbage), add some couscous to attract those birds that don't want to eat their greens  a bit of cod liver oil, and dried bloodworms. Everyone gobbles it up, never any left at the end of the day. =D> I am feeding this to all of my birds (gouldian, societies, shaftails, green singers and zebras).

That DOES look good! Do you put it all in a food processor for a few seconds? Hmmm - that should go good mixed in with my eggfood.

Oh yes, forgot to add that part. I pass it through my little $9.99 food processor, just until all the veggies are the right size. Add the oil couscous and blood worms after. :D

Everytime I make it, I think, add some diced tomatoes and you have "TABOULE"

That's exactly what I thought when I saw the picture! :-)

I have to try that too. Mixing in couscous is a good idea. Maybe I can get my birds to eat other greens except romaine that way...
Walk-in aviary with Waxbills (6 Cordon Bleu, 3 Orange Cheek, 3 Black-rumped, 1 Lavender, ), 1 European Goldfinch, 4 Gouldians, 2 Spice Finches, 6 Owl Finches, 4 Budgies and 2 male Button Quail.
I also have 2 parrotlets, 3 dogs, 1 snake and 3 freshwater fishtanks.

That does look so good, no wonder your birds go after it. I will have to try the couscous added in.

I've served all those items separately...I will try mixing them. My birds especially the owls, zebras and shaftails love couscous.

Thanks Janine! Hope you are feeling better.

Yum!! I'd like to try this with quinoa. Can you make big batches and freeze for later? Also, what's good about cod liver oil and bloodworms and where do you buy them?

I personally wouldn't freeze it, seems only natural that when it defrosts the water in the salads would make it mushy. Can't for the likes of me recall what the codliver oil is for, but I know that it is good for them  The bloodworms I buy at the pet fod store in the fish section.

How long do you think this will keep in the fridge if I don't freeze it? A few days? A week?

Are you using whole grain couscous? I don't think white couscous would be that healthy because it would be just like giving them pasta, don't you think?

I am using whole wheat couscous.. I usually make enough to last 4 or 5 days without any problems.

Liz, I will send a bag, easier to package :D and the cost is only something like $3. After everything that you have done for myself and my fids it is the least that I can do. =D>
