Candles, insence and rug cleaners

Post by cookiemom18 » Fri Jul 20, 2007 7:58 am

Can you light insence and burn candles in another room with doors open if you have finch? Would rug cleaners harm finch? How about the solid room fresheners? I have gouldians and society and gave the baby society finch to my son, so we both have questions. Thanks for any help you can give.

Boy I hope so. I am Buddhist so candles and incense are going to keep happen' at my place. I no longer burn either in the sewing room where my birds are, I'm pretty sure the Buddha in there will understand. But downstairs, at the library altar, I will be. I think I've done that once or twice with the birds upstairs and haven't seen any problems.

So far everything I've read about this topic suggests that scented candles, aerosol cleaners, room fresheners, etc. are potentially toxic to birds because birds have a much more efficient (sensitive) respiratory system than we do. Books that touch on the subject say such products should be avoided to be safe.

Authorities recommend that when you need to do heavy cleaning, you should remove the birds to a well-ventilated area separate from the place being cleaned, and only replace the birds after the cleaning is complete and everything is dry and ventilated.

That being said, with good ventilation (open windows) and no scented/chemical/aerosol products being used in the bird's room, burning incense or a standard candle is probably safe. For cleaning products, however, I would recommend that birds be removed from the room until the cleaning product has dried and the area has been aired out. Better to be safe than sorry.
