When Misty first brought her pair to my aviary I was SHOCKED by their size. The are definately larger than gouldians. They look so big to me. I compared them on the perch to my goulds many times and they are much bigger. I don't know about weight, but in size they are bigger.

That's a pretty big finch, then.

Well... here's to success for the purple grenadier venture between Misty and Sally! =D> =D>

I don't think they are bigger than the Gouldians at all. They just look it because of their long tails. And their long tails is what makes them so pretty to me :) Besides their colors in general.

I have to catch a pair tomorrow so I will weigh my pair to see what their weights are compared to a Gouldian.

I am ignorant on purple grenadiers, but when I saw them at the bird mart I thought they were beautiful. That's why I asked you about them.
Wish you the best of luck with them..

I find this discussion on their size interesting. I thought I saw them at the Bird Mart in Roseville, but was surprised by how small they were...what I saw was, I think, smaller than Lady Guoldians.

Maybe I was wrong in thinking they were gren's.

I guess you could have smaller sized gouldians but the gren I have seen have been smaller than goulds. The tail feathers are longer than the tapered gouldians but the gren's bodies are sleeker. If you google the species you will find many weights and measurements given ranging from the 5.25 to the 6 inch and weights I posted in the earlier post.
Though there could be exceptions to the rule as someone may have a 'honker gren" :D

I only have my one to go on, but he is not that big at all. He is sort of a buff Blue cap size. More broad in the chest, but overall size is only slightly bigger. I think Goulds are bigger, especially some I have seen.
In the pic I posted he is sitting next to an African Silverbill newly fledged. Not that that helps much.

They LOOK bigger than goulds to me. They are beautiful birds, but not one that I really want in my aviary for various reasons.

It will be interesting to get the official data on them once some are weighed and measured. Then we will know for sure. Either way, they are captivating birds.

Here are my third pair of Purple Grenadiers, plus a photo of two of the five Cherries I picked up in Atlanta. Only two of the five Cherries belong to me. The Gren hen has been plucked on the head a bit, and she has several white feathers on her wings, but I don't think that would be a genetic flaw.

Thanks for more pictures -- I guess Gren's can be pretty wicked to each other based off of what Fardad and others have said. Beautiful birds, though and very interesting.
