Finch Cage fell in the middle of the night :(

Post by Strickalator » Mon Nov 24, 2008 12:20 pm

 :( I feel so horrible,I was working hard on making a safe place for the cage to be hung from a wood perch I got , where I had hung it was to weak and it fell, so at 3 am jessie my female finch darted out of the cage and screamed and now she has feathers missing from her head and its all skin. When I went to check it at 3 am 2 days ago it looked like what would be a scrape, so I applied aloe vera to the spot, its all clean and just skin now, no blood and she seems fine now but bobbie and jessie are mad at me and its like I am starting all over again to get thier trust, I have had them for almost 2 months now.

Anyways it was a scare, I thought jessie was dead, thankfully shes all better.

In the future is there any other thing for scrapes like that I can use besides aloe vera to help or did I use the right thing by applying a fresh aloe vera leaf on her head?

I have since re-done the cage where it hangs and it is not going to fall now, I am new at this so I hope my finches forgive me

I would apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment (the same as I use for lubricating when putting on legbands).

Shawn, don't beat yourself up, we've all done things we later regret. Thankfully, your birds survived the experience, and they will get over it and forgive you. That was good to apply the aloe vera right away, and like Liz said, an antibiotic like Neosporin is always good to keep on hand.

ahh okies, I was not sure if I could use neosporin because it is greasy, having petroluim in it as I know birds dont need oil on thier wings, is there a non greasy neosporin or can I use what I already have in small amounts?

OMG...that would have scared the heck out of me too! Glad to hear they made it through the ordeal...but I am betting it will take you much longer to get over the experience.

I had a scare a few months ago when I woke up to my finches fluttering around like crazy so I hopped out of bed and checked on them. After peeking into their cage I saw a little chipmunk that had gotten in there and was eating the seeds!! I am sure we both scared each other and peed in our pants...well at least I almost did!

The chipmunk made a quick escape to some dark corner of the house and we caught him the next day but I sure didn't sleep well that night wondering if I would feel some furry feet climbing around my bed...eeek! #-o

Still don't quite know how he got in the house....we are guessing he came in through the open door because he was hanging around our porch and looking for food. It was my own fault since I started tossing him some crackers and had named him "Alvin". Well....Alvin went to heaven sooner than he expected. Nobody messes with my Finches!

I just hate hearing "bumps" in the night! :?

I have always wanted a little pet chipmunk, they are one of the cutest creatures ever created!!!

I'm glad that your birds made it, i'm sure they're over the bad experience but it'll take you time. Just realize that you didn't do anything wrong and things happen, drop the guilt and enjoy your birds :D they love you!
I don't have any finches right now but I used to, I'll try to provide my knowledge around the forum
