New and different addition to my bird collection!!!

Post by cindy » Tue Jan 18, 2011 10:23 am

ok, like I do not have enough little ones fluttering around I am adopting a winged one of a different kind. My friend breeds lineolated parakeets or linnies for short. He called me the other day a bit concerned for this one little mauve/slate colored boy. Apparently someone bought this little beauty from him about a year ago and returned him because the owner wanted a brighter color.

The little mauve is very sweet, talks, knows commands like "step up". My friend thought of me and my lovebird Lucy and how much I "induldge" my birds.

I am going to see him in a little bit and can't wait!!! This is the same friend that I got my bourkes from and raises the most beautiful dark cinnamon and white face bourkes. His linnies are known for their deep colors, he showed me one to the mauves this weekend and it was stunning, very deep in color!

When i get back I will post a picture of the little guy! Don't worry...not gonna start breeding them....strictly a pet!!!

I have a Mauve too  Very pretty color - different from the normal colors...

If you ever need a mate - just let me know! I have plenty and will be going thru mine after sexing them since I took the whole flock... I don't need that many and several are the same colors.

They are really interesting birds - wait to you hear some of the noises they make.

Misty, my friend has so many different colors, the turquoise and deep cobalts are so pretty. He has creaminos, olives, etc.

I don't want to get into breeding hookbills except the bourkes (year down the road yet). This little guy was bought by a lady less than a year ago, you can tell he has been handled but left alone alot. He has a fear of hands in the cage right now...of course everything is new to him and he has been in two differnet homes including an aviary in the last three weeks. I did get him in my hand, closed my hand gently around his back and tickled his head, if he fussed I said "tickle' and he bowed his head, he really liked his head rubbed. I've done this twice for about 5 minutes, each time he relaxed enough to relax my hand around him. If I opened my hand he scrambled to get away, as soon as I closed my hand he relaxed and bowed his head.

He went down and ate a little. I just hope with a lot of patience he will calm down enough to trust me. My friend told me to try him out for a week and see how it goes, if it does not work then he said to bring him back.

He stays still on the perch and looks at food in my hand but does not trust me enough yet to take it from me.

I would like it to work....since you have these little guys do you have any suggestions? If let him out he runs from me, as he did at my friend's home. He does enjoy just sitting on your shoulder under your hair or in the nook of a bent arm, head buried.

This is the little guy, slate/mauve with a bit of seagreen on it's chest.

Thank you Janine, he has the biggest eyes! I called my friend (the breeder) to let him know how the little guy was doing...he told me the bird was played with alot in the begining and then left alone for a while, no other birds or noise in the house before going back to him...he said the fact that he has only been with me for about 3 hours and he let me hold him and tickle his head is pretty good.

I don't have any real advice since the flock I have was never handled. So none of mine are actually tame and they can BITE! OUCH!

I think I have one of every color with two of a few colors such as the Cream hens.

They LOVE their veggies :)

Mine are more of a "flock" so they move as one - and they do have the cutest eyes And antics - crazy cute. :D

Here are mine ;)

Misty, yours are so sweet looking...he is already making a few noises, chattering at me...very unlike parrotlets or lovebirds!
