Fresh seed vs store bought seed...Guess the results?

Post by cindy » Wed Aug 24, 2011 9:42 pm

As Nancy (Foosa101) posted she has acess to fresh seed/millets. My husband I drove out to see her since she live near me. We brought home dove proso, Japenese millet, brwon top millet.

I offered the three in separate dishes to both owl flights...they dove in, the top winner was Japanese millet, runner up Brown top millet.
The ate it all. The dove proso was nibbled on but the other two won.

I did the same test on my Lavendars and Green singers....same results.

The samples were given along side they usual store bought seed mix and Zupreem pellets. Pellets were still eaten but the store bought seed mix was ignored. The Lavenders are on ABBA which is the seed from the previous owner. They ignored the ABBA.

Now what I did with the zebras and shaft tails...I mixed a simple parakeet blend with some of the Japanese, Brown top and Dove proso....they downed the Japanese, Brown top...some Dove proso, some of the millet and oats from the store brand. They also downed pellets...evident by the colored powder at the bottom of the dish.

We are going to try fresh Red millet and German Foxtail millet soon...plus we will be sprouting Purple Top turnips, Durana White Clover and Alfalfa for green munchies.

Tonight I added fresh canary seed and thisle to the Green Singer, owls and Lavendars dishes and everyone got a dish of chopped soybeans, oats and pendovics....resuts wil be in tomorrow ~ did they like it? Tune in.

Nancy...I thank you and I think we are on to something here!!!!! and I don't think my finches mind being test subjects!!! :D :D :D

Nancy has a topic thread on this http://www.finchforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15426

just wanted to add that most of my zebra pair have young that are weaning on this, the love the pellets and Japanese and brown top millet. I also have a pair of fawns with new hatchlings and the smaller Japenese and Brown top and some dove proso along with pellets and dried ABBA nestling eggfood is wht they are giving to the chicks.

Trying to type this from my cell..anyhow, once we get certain blends or mixes down I can offer wholesale pricing (basically what you are paying retail) w/ shipping included. I wouldn't be able to do this if i wasn't already doing it for myself. I do not own a business and I will not be making a profit off this...take advantage if you may.

So wait, do you grow and harvest the seed yourself? Is it dried or fresh green seed heads? I would LOVE to be able to offer my birds green seed as I've been told it's highly nutritious and the birds love it.. would it be possible to ship that, though? Or would it spoil in transit?

Tiffany, I went to the seed farm where Nancy is, it is amazing. She gave me some of the Japanese that still had green as well as brown seed in it. When I put the bowls in the lavendar and owls flights they flocked to it and within 30 minutes there were only hulls left. This is not on a spray but in a bag...I took pictures with my phone of all three seed and it will take me a bit to get them posted.

The farm is set on acres and acres of land, rolling hills and big oaks...it is in the same county I live in and it was like going to another world. My husband loves road biking with groups there and now I see why.

WOW! That looks so fresh. I have a question though -- is the canary seed dyed? Why is it so red? This is very interesting and exciting. =D> :)
God is my redeemer and it is through Him I have found eternal happiness. I am grateful, I am blessed, and I am truly loved. I wish all this and more for all members of our finch forum family. May you all be blessed and highly favored. <3
