They really are adorable
I love the crested look.
I think the black tails are really wierd and I don't really know what mutations might cause this.
From what I found out in adults there are two mutations that have black tails, charcoal and black front.
Sooo I really hve no idea here
And it seems very unlikely that the parents are plucking them and only the coloured feather.
As boring as it seems, it looks like we need to see them molt.

I agree.....the male uncrested, not pied is really handsome in person. I did look up the two mutations you mentioned, I agree with you a molt is needed to judge what is at play here. Then again it may not show until they are bred.
