Re: Post M-TB Cleaning & Quarantine
Ginene I don't have any RCCBs to sell at this time, mine have not been breeding. My friend Helen I'm sure would be able to set you up with a pair of Stars, she has both Red-faced and Yellow-faced. I'll ask around about the CBs. I think you said once before that your husband makes business trips to Dallas, maybe something could be arranged for the fall. Otherewise, USPS would save you some money.
As far as asking the vet, I just meant check with her to see if 5 days would make any huge difference. It's probably just a guideline. I know there is a bird club in NY, that would be a good source of breeders, I would think. I imagine the reason your vet said to go with small breeders rather than brokers is that most brokers don't breed themselves, they simply search the country for birds for sale or work with breeders that supply them. Many brokers then resell the birds with no history, they intermingle purchased birds with no quarantine, they will sell siblings without saying they are siblings, or they will pass off birds they purchased as ones they bred themselves. Not to say there aren't good brokers out there, but putting it simply, most brokers are in it for the money. Few breeders make much if any money breeding finches, unless they breed enough to almost be a bird mill themselves. Instead, most small breeders are in it for the love of the finches, they sell some of their stock simply to keep their numbers manageable and to help pay for some of their expenses.

Yes...this is exactly the situation with the local guy I purchased some birds from. He only sells his offspring, and uses the money to purchase finch necessities. I had a great experience with him, but my concern was with his son breeding father/daughter and mother/son. I figured the dad probably did it too. I wasn't aware of it before I made the initial purchase. Then when I went back for Goulds, I bought 1 of his hens and a male that he didn't breed himself. Anyway, I would be so happy to purchase Stars from your friend. I think 2 males would be best (1 red & 1 yellow face). Does she breed other species as well? I appreciate you asking around about the RCCB's...I know they are very difficult to breed. I absolutely ADORED my pair...definitely a favorite of mine!!!! I haven't even contacted Martie yet!!! Lol! I am assuming I will be able to purchase birds from her based on Dante letting me know she will be at the upcoming mart in NY:oops: !!! I spoke to my hubby, and he said Rochester (where Martie is) is actually 2 hours closer than that mart. He said we could drive there after the quarantine period, as long as its ok with Martie. I have to PM her...but it wouldn't be till mid-late October. The same would go for the Stars and RCCB's...mid-late October. Thanks for the help, as always Sally. I miss my birds terribly...especially my babiesmost small breeders are in it for the love of the finches, they sell some of their stock simply to keep their numbers manageable and to help pay for some of their expenses.

Line breeding father/daughter or mother/son is not the terrible thing that breeding siblings is supposed to be, as long as it is done very carefully. One generation, and then outcross like crazy. Many breeders use it to try to strengthen a certain desirable trait. However, when it is continued, then you have the problems of health, decreased size, etc. When in doubt, the safest thing is to purchase one bird from one source and then its mate from another source.Ginene wrote: I had a great experience with him, but my concern was with his son breeding father/daughter and mother/son. Great suggestion. The only M/F pair I bought that I would have been concerned about was the Green Singers. The others were a M/M pair of owls, Female Gould he bred/Male Gould he purchased, and a lone male RCCB. I have his number, so I can always see if he has any other breeds. I know his son got into breeding Cuban Melodious. When in doubt, the safest thing is to purchase one bird from one source and then its mate from another source.
Hmmm...I wonder if she has fawn and regular owls. I'm thinking a M/M pair/1fawn and 1normalShe also breeds Owls, Shaft-tails, Gouldians, Societies--can't think what else.

She has both fawn and normal Owls. I will see her this coming Saturday, so I will talk to her about some birds for you.Ginene wrote:Hmmm...I wonder if she has fawn and regular owls. I think you gave her my info once before, when we were looking for Stars for Lil Joe. Is it too early for you to give it to her again??? You have to convince her to join the forum Sally
