update: gouldian chicks coloring up

Post by dfcauley » Sun Nov 16, 2008 5:58 pm

Just wondering if anyone can tell what color these two chicks may be....

Dad is yb/oh/pb and mom is gb/bh/pb.

The one that is coloring up the most is obviously a purble breast, but is it a dilute? Never had one before and wasn't sure of the light color of green.

The forecaster didn't predict that.... :  lImage

Hi Donna, If your YB male is visually yellow then he is Double factor yellow. Single factor yellow with a purple breast male will appear dilute which I believe your young one is, with the purple breast.

The Genetic Forecaster does show the offspring being dilute with your parents, if you highlight the row.

Liz are you saying that all visually yellow backed cocks are double factored?

Thanks Liz. I didn't realize that the double factor meant they were visually yellow...... still trying to leave about these colors.

No - as far as I understand it all - visual YB cocks can be either single or double factored IF they have a white or lilac breast. If they have a purple breast, then they will be double factor yellow (visual YB) OR single factor yellow but dilute (not visually YB).

I have a RH/WB/YB cock who is single factored. If this one had a purple breast, he would be a dilute.

I also have a RH/PB/YB cock who is double factored.

Another way to tell if they are double or single factored YB cocks is the amount of blue around the head and under the beak. Single factor will be much more noticeable whereas the double factor will be much paler as to be almost white.
Somebody correct me if I messed that up. :)

I understand completely Deborah! I find the genetics difficult too and had to edit my post as I had it backwards. I really have to think about it bit by bit and this is just the simple stuff at the beginning, don't ask me to delve any deeper! LOL

I have a white breasted SF yellow cock that I would consider a dilute....he has a slight green to his body with the light blue around his head. I also have a DF yellow with a white breast. He is more yellow with no blue around his neck. This genetics thing is confusing. If you have a green or blue backed bird, they can only be dilutes if they have a purple breast.
I don't think there is a difference between a SF and a dilute when it comes to the yellows.

Can someone pls explain what single an double factor and dilute means, and how to identify this. Thanks

They look great, Donna! Real pretty colours.

How do you have the cuttlebone attached in the middle of the photo?

It has a hole drilled in the middle and screwed into the perch post.
I hardly ever see them using it. ..... Every once in a while they do, but mostly they eat egg shells and F-Vite.
