Post by KarenB » Tue Aug 19, 2014 9:02 pm

My name is Beans Too (but you can call me Beans), and I just fledged today. I am 23 days old. My four parents are so proud of me :)

Here I am.....this is my good side.

Or maybe this is my good side. Ah, both are great!

Here are my parents. They really love me <3

I noticed that one of my parents laid an egg today. They must love me so much they want more just like me. But I'm the first, so I will always be extra special!

So sweet! Karen what is that you use on the grate? Did you make it? I am assuming it is to provide Beans with a nice soft place to practice flying.

Derk, I use puppy pee pads on the bottom. Cheaper than newspaper!

@Sheather, I think if I had to wait for him for 30 days, I'd have gone mad. He shot out of that nest like a cannonball when I put my hand in to take out a bowl. Then he hung onto the side of the cage for a bit, and then hopped down to the bottom. That's when I grabbed my camera. He kept looking around and looking around. I picked the two clearest shots I could get.

He still looks like he's got a couple of bald areas around his bum, but I'm guessing those will eventually fill in. Also, he has like a brooder patch on his belly. I guess that's normal too?

So does he look pied, or is he just fawn and white.....or is that the same thing? His markings are pretty symmetrical looking to me, but I don't really know the true definition of pied. (I am, however, very familiar with chocolate pie, as some of you well know.)

I digress.

Oh the cuteness!

So adorable!

His little face is so sweet. I love the wettish look on the babies' faces because the feathers haven't unsheathed yet.

He's a very snappy looking fellow! So. Darn. Cute!!!!

And the photo with his parents (all four of them!!)? Adorable!

Such a little cutie pie. So happy for him!

I can't wait to finish up his photo array. We'll need one last photo -- when he's totally feathered up and weaned. It shall be a happy day!

I wouldn't worry about the belly. That's always the last spot to feather up, along with the rear flank/side area. (Especially since you've got all short feathers in that belly area, without the wings or long flight feathers to cover up bald spots.)

I can't believe you have another egg! That's happy! More babies!
I wish you lived closer as I'd totally try to talk you out of one of your future Beans lookalikes! LOL

That's funny how he shot out of the nest!

I use floor diapers too as a cage liner. They're great because they have a plastic backing.
I also use paper towels. Put a few layers down and pull them off throughout the day so it stays clean. I'd put down the paper towels when I had Squeepers falling out of the nest and I just kept them as I found they really enjoyed pecking around and foraging through all the little bits of food that get kicked out of the bowls.

Indeed, I believe pied and fawn/white is the same.

There are two basic types of society finches: self and pied.
Self societies don't have patches of color per se; they have a more solid coloring with gradual transitions between the various areas. Depending on the variety, nearly all self societies lack areas of true bright white. (Exception is some of the lighter mutations.)

Pied societies have distinctive patches of color and white. All of your lot are pied.

Beans is a fawn pied, since he's got white patches.

The non-pied version would be a fawn self, which looks like this guy:
http://efinch.com/birdpix/fawnselfsoc.jpg

I have a special affinity for pied fawns, as my favorite finch ever --- a little society named Elvis --- was a fawn pied. He was the happiest creature ever, yet I don't have a single photo of him which makes me sad. He had the best personality ever. He was just so darn jolly and there wasn't an hour that went by without an enthusiastic song and dance. He was wonderful.
I'd paint my pottery in my bird room (with underglaze, which has no odor, not actual paints) and he'd come and sit on my paintbrush handles (sometimes in the bucket; other times while they were in use) and he'd sing and dance his little heart out! He was the BEST.

And there may be more eggs now, but I haven't checked. When I got home last night, they were all back in the nest. I had put in a second nest which I had very carefully and artfully stuffed with nesting material, and rather than taking up residence in both nests, they removed all the nesting from the intruder, placed it into their current nest, then proceeded to remove the nest altogether. Take that! I found it on the floor of the cage. I removed it. I have assumed the opinion that these guys are quite the nest builders.

Thanks MiaCarter for clearing up the self and pied thing. That is pretty much what I thought about if they had white. To me pied always means random splashes of color (or lack thereof) as opposed to a nice symmetrical pattern. I really didn't think they could throw anything but pieds, but just wanted to know for sure.

I know how you feel about your Elvis, Mia. I had an African grey that I was so closely bonded to, and he was special in so many ways. He went everywhere with me, and we knew what each other was thinking. I believe that's why he never really talked. He didn't need to. He succumbed to PBFD....He had it when I got him, and I didn't find out till he was 2. He lived to be 3. This was over 15 years ago, and to this day I still really miss him and feel melancholy when I think about it.
