BALDY NO MORE!

Post by Animalzoo » Tue Apr 26, 2016 6:40 am

Hi everyone, I decided to start a new topic for baldy and Mel so you can see their progress. Best news ever is Baldy is no more baldy and Mr Melanitis is now simply just happy Mel. I have a sneaky feeling these two are bonding too because they always sit side by side AND Mel has started singing. I'm over the moon. Baldy has a black face so they'll suit very well :D

Baldy's feathers are still a bit tired but she's going through a great feather growth spurt. Here you can see...

Image

Mel's back feathers are beautiful and he has really become tidy and sleek. His tail is getting longer and all in all he's a very pretty bird.

This red head girl is also one I rescued. She's still a bit scruffy too and has lost some head feathers but they're all in different stages of recovery and feather growth.

This is Mel and Baldy from the back, you can see she has a little further to go yet.

Mel on the left, then Baldy, the same red head girl and the girl on the far right is the female I bought with her pastel mate. Debbie suggested they had been breeding all last year and she was tired so these guys are in rest hence her head feathers are also going. She's not showing any signs of growth yet either but theres no hurry, these guys are all on holiday. The mate is fine and looking stunning but I can see these two are well bonded and I have seen him hop and sing to her so they're not being split up any time soon!

One last one of the couple....lookat the blue on his back. He's gorgeous!

I keep monitoring it but I am still concerned about their feet. You can see they are crusty and appear dry...still! Not all of them have it but Mel and Baldy do. I keep a permanent bowl of water in there for baths and they've all had a good dose of Scatt. Perhaps it's just the way they are but I'm not convinced. They don't appear sore or uncomfortable and none of them are pecking or having a go at their feet. Any thoughts?

Animalzoo

Woo-hoo!!!
Mel, still has a week or two to go with his last little pin feathers, but he really is a beautiful bird.

Congratulations Baldy, finally real feathers. Wonderful !

Looks like the kids are all going through a major molt.

Once done, you are going to have some seriously pretty birds :D . Keep them hardboiled eggs and other good foods coming.

Good job Sue.

Thanks guys. I really didn't do anything special apart from look after them the way we all look after our babies.....with TLC. The main learning curve was buying the mite and parasite treatments and the vitamin supplements. I didnt have these in the birdy medicine cabinet before so with a small fortune I stocked up which will and already has benefited all my birds.

Patience is key. When did I pick these babies up, wasn't it just after Christmas so we are talking 4 months or so to get to this progress. I honestly thought I'd have to wait out the year before Baldy started to get better so I'm so pleased for her. What an improvement, she must be feeling so much better.

Eggs are provided twice a week. I was doing it more often but one of the other hens started giving me back eggs on the floor so I pulled back only a small bit. Eggs and salad all the time really. If not one then the other, not to mention good quality seeds, a permanent bath with fresh water daily and an additional dry egg food supplement. Oh and sweeties (or candy as you say) in the form of Millet. They can fly in a good size cage and have full spectrum lights and a window nearby. Water gets vitamin supplements. Tbh, this is what I give most of my birds and I know its staple food and water for all of us and how we look after our babies. These guys were just left in bad pet shop conditions and they're sensitive little souls. I'm just glad I helped a few of them. I know there may be more but I dare not return to that place or I won't be coming home empty handed  :? So these have years with me and hopefully in time to come will give me lovely little babies.

Well done Sue!

Isn't it amazing what good care and proper diet can do. Good on you for taking them in. Definitely worth the wait and I look forward to seeing a new photo once they are all colored up and in full feather!

Mel is a beauty!

Sue, All I can say is WOW! Beautiful job you've done on these little ones. You have given me hope to get through my first Gouldian Molt. After reading all the horror stories about "compressed molt," and "stuck in the molt," I was wondering if Gouldians were truly for me (who needs that much angst!), but if you can bring these birds to the condition you have, by just providing great basic supportive care, then I feel encouraged!
