Mr. PT Whydah's Excellent Backyard Adventure

Post by Shannylee » Mon Aug 15, 2016 12:34 pm

This morning was deep cleaning day for the cages. I removed everything and did a good scrub down of each. I set the birds in the filtered sun to dry off and checked back on them about 10 minutes later. There sat my beautiful, crazy Mr. PT Whydah...ON TOP OF HIS CAGE! Rut roh! One of the seed cup doors was stuck open so he made his great escape. He flew up into the oak trees but wouldn't leave the yard. He was focused on the aviary and wanted in. I set a catch-cage in front of the aviary, opened the doors, and talked to him while he flew back and forth between the aviary, the top of the cage, and the trees. After 2 hours, I hung a seed cup on the outside of the open door. He came down for a quick snack and then flew back up in the tree. *sigh* He finally came down for another snack and hopped in the cage. #:-S His adventure wasn't nearly as long or as far away as Apollo's but he chatted about it with his wife for at least an hour. LOL!!

My heart sank when I saw him on top of his cage. Then when he flew into the trees, I just knew he was gone forever. I couldn't believe it when he kept calling and swooping down at me. I thought he was going to land on me several times. My biggest concern was the neighborhood Red Shouldered Hawk that is VERY interested (and has chewed 2 holes) in my aviary. The hawk didn't show up until this evening. *whew*

Such a great heartwarming story. And so nice to think that he made his own decision to return home to you. I'd like to believe that mine would choose me over the wild too, but I'm not so sure

So lucky that he came back home! That is two success stories now of loose birds returning home. =D>

Sally, I kept thinking "Apollo did it so I know it can be done!" LOL! Mr. Whydah is very bonded to me so I stayed with him and kept encouraging him to come down from the trees. He's the coolest and craziest bird I've ever had.
