Oh, i am soo jeleous! You 2 live so close to all the bird action!!!! I wish I could get to such events as often as you get to!

Dianna, i am particularly envious of the gould you bought. I assume female to pair with the male ... boomer i believe you called him. Let me do my 20 questions real quick. Who did you get him from. Did they have more? How much?
I am hoping to get a YH,WB,YBSB female at the mart in July!
Goulds, Owls, Gold Breasts, Stars, Zebras, Societies
An obscene number of chicks and eggs
And an incredibly rare St. Goldena Breast finch
Anyone want some finches???

Too long... I don't think so. I think it is great that you have such a varied collection. You also have the perfect space to keep them
I will probably do the same someday when I am not into breeding, just different types to watch and enjoy.... and if they do breed then sell or trade the babies.

Well, Donna did a really nice thing. She traded her gouldian for that gouldian from Floyd. Then she sold me the traded bird for a great price.
Her head color looks bright orange but the tip of her beak is red. So I'm thinking she is really a red head based on reading here that yellow heads have yellow tipped beaks.

Can you breed two yellows together?

BTW, after I do a new count, I am going to make a new signature line. It changes so much it was getting to be alot of trouble.

Had three BCCB's to hatch yesterday. I am trying to decide if I want to let them try AGAIN or go ahead and foster them. They let me down every time.

congrats on the new babies Donna. What too many birds? 39 sounds just about right to me, never too many fids, if you have the room. :D

More Babies :D Hope these do well, either with parents or fosters.
The numbers in the aviary is fine as long as you don't have fighting and it sounds like you have one happy flock :D

Hi Donna,

The Lavies are so pretty in person. :) How did Floyd know the sexes of each bird? Did he guarantee that they were a male and female?

They love fruit/sweet things. The eat most everything the Parrot Finches do and mine are not big insect eaters either.

"Can you breed two yellows together?"

Are you asking if you can breed two yellow Gouldians together? Yes you can.

Donna are these the Red Cheek Cordon Blue's or do you have regular Blue Caps as well?

What are they doing with the babies? Tossing? Or just not feeding? I can't imagine why they wouldn't feed as you offer everything for them. :? Will your Societies feed the babies?[/quote]

Hi Misty,

Yes the lavenders are very pretty birds I love them. Floyd did not guarantee them to be hen and cock, but he turned them over and shows me something with their red tail feather......and he said "this is the hen and this is the cock" I know if he made a mistake I can swap one of them. Haven't heard one sing yet, but they make little soft noises.
I cut an orange this morning and they loved it Floyd said they loved mealies. I also tried an orange in my aviary for the first time and my painted finches love it They ate and ate at the orange all morning.

Hopefully that will teach the others to eat some fruit.

The babies that hatched are Blue Capped Courdons. I gave them to the society finches. I have given them many times a chance to raise their own at the expense of the poor little babies. Yes, the society finches are feeding them. I don't know why they won't raise their own, because I have given them everything I can think of. They don't toss, but stop feeding about the third day.

The reason I asked about breeding yellow to yellow, I wasn't sure because I knew you couldn't breed blue to blue.

You can breed yellow Gouldians to yellow as Misty said and you can breed blue to blue as well. Just make sure the birds are unrelated and healthy - like always.

Her head color looks bright orange but the tip of her beak is red. So I'm thinking she is really a red head based on reading here that yellow heads have yellow tipped beaks.
Did a bit of reading, the yellow head can only be expressed if the bird is genetically a red head, not black. Black is dominant and will express as the head color and leave a yellow tipped beak even though it is DFR. The RTB you have on the YH means you have a SFY split to R or vice versa, a SFR/ split to Y (same difference). The pairing of this with your RH male means you will have 37.5% orange heads SFY and 62.5% red heads if male or black heads if female. Pretty sweet combo of offspring you have in those 2 to be honest.

Also, you got a nice set up with the white and purple breasts which will mix to give some combos and i think you also have yellow and green back. You got the gambit of gould colors covered in there.

I am pretty much going the same route as you except I am looking to go strictly yellow backs and white breasts.

BTW, Donna is great! She is offering to do the same for me if there is a YH available.

Congrats on that hen, she is a doll.
