Yeah Misty was the one who told me to try cheese grating the egg :)

I thought, too, that since they started eating it grated I could maybe just now put it in the food processor since grating it is time consuming.

Nope, they will only even consider eating it grated! #-o
So I wasted four eggs in the processor because they wouldn't touch it that way.

Picky little turds

I wouldn't sprout my mix with the anise and caraway, etc. I am not sure how those aromatic seeds would do. Guess it couldn't hurt to try, but I do one that is purely millet and canary, or the Birds R Us Maintenance Mix.

Donna..this is going to sound odd but what color dish/bowl do you use with the egg?

I use either a potato ricer or garlic press to make the egg look like worms. if I have a lot I use the ricer, just a few, the garlic press works just as well.
Oh yeah, it saves on band-aids too!! LOL

What on earth is a potato ricer?

I never even thought about using my garlic press but might that be more of a headache than just shaving my fingers every now and then :D

Many many years ago my husbands grandmother showed me the wonders of potato dumplings and you had to run the potatoes through the ricer. I've had one ever since and have used it more for the birds then potatoes. LOL
She tried to teach me all of her old time recipes from Czech. You know the kind that have no receipe amounts, you just have to "feel" the mixture. lol

Love the ricer though!

Well I grated eggs and carrots and everyone got a good helping.

The owls like always dove right in. As did the parent zebras and the chicks from the first clutch. The chicks from the second clutch had a discussion about it while sitting on the nest box, now they are hiding in their canary nest peeking out!

The shaftail parents and new fledglings are at the top of the cage discussing it but not going near it. Their offspring from the first clutch like it. The St. Helena like it.

The Red Headed finches ignore it and went for the seed and dried egg food.

The RCCBs and Gold Breast are playing statue from the highest perch. Societies like it..they eat anything.

I think the thing that is good is the owls, both pairs eat mealies, dried egg food mix, hard boiled eggs and veggies. They just are not as fussy. Same with the zebras.

I bought a ricer for a friend of mine but never owned one. they love it.

I had a little Siclian Grandmother that made evrything from scratch from pastas to meatballs. She use to cover the table with a large mat and roll out pasta dough and show me how to stuff and seall the "pillows". Her meat ball my family loves and requests them often. They know when I am making them since I get up early and start. Along side of it goes the pot of sauce all hand made. It smells oh so Italian throughout the house. Don't you love using your family's traditional recipes handed down?

Oh gosh Tiffany that is hilarious! I wondered the same thing, but didn't want to admit it. Never heard of a potato ricer in my life.
And I am sure I would look like that woman too. Only younger.....

Wow, our family has always had a potato ricer! They are wonderful! Especially if you have kids who are really fussy and freak out if there is the slightest lump in their mashed potatoes.... :-" Not me, of course....

Mom would put them through the ricer before adding the butter and milk and blending, for the creamiest mashed potatoes ever!

I actually like riced potatoes just right out of the ricer, with a bit of vegetarian gravy on top - nice and light.

Hint: Make sure the potatoes are well cooked. If under cooked it will be impossible to squeeze them through those holes!
